1600 Beetle Engine Removal
count - April 13th, 2004 at 07:14 AM

"Removal" searches come up with everything BUT Engine Removal:cry

As well as what is in the Workshop Manual,
are there any other tips for the removal of the motor
from a 1974 1600 Beetle?

How do I tell if it's a Generator or an Alternator?

Thanks
Ivan

Generator the body is the one diameter.
Near the pulley is holes on either side and you can see the commutator and brushes. Ususally 2 studs on top for wires.

Alternator it is fatter at the pulley end, and solid case - no holes. Alt also has a 3 pin plug and a 8mm stud for wire attatchment.

try google groups

engine removal is pretty easy once you've done it a few times. Make sure you have a good floor jack and jackstands, and take your time to do things perfectly.
