Does anyone know of a mufflers system that gives great performance and a great note at the same time, I have a 1916 vw Oztrike ( I dont mind if its loud ) .
I've welded up 3 different muffler systems for my 1915.
I didn't notice a great deal of difference in performance.
I have a think 2 inch 2 bolt flange attached to my 1 5/8 header and all the systems bolt on from there and turn towards the drivers side. The muffler
sits tucked close to the drivers side rear guard.
The best sounding exhaust by far was a home made fat-boy style muffler. It was deep and pulsed at idle like a WRX with a big exhaust and it buzzed
when the cam comes on. I might make another one of these. It started with the flange then I cut down a sting to increase the pipe diameter from 2 to 2
1/2 inches. Then the 2 1/2 pipe hooked around 180 degrees then 90 degrees and into the muffler.
Next I tried a 2 inch chambered muffler. I wanted to use the Stan Pobjoy exhaust length principle but I didn't want the car to sound like beach
buggy. The single chamber sounded quite deep and quite good but it was louder than I expected. I had doubts about how the chamber was messing with the
magic exhaust length.
Those doubts led me to make up another 2 inch system of the same length with a straight through muffler. This time I went to the effort of putting a
tip on the exhaust so it exited beyond the guard. Funnily this is the quitest muffler. I think the carbs sound great but the muffler itself sounds a
bit windy. I can hear air moving but no real clear note.
I don't know which exhaust performs the best without doing dyno testing.
The best sounding exhaust is the fat boy style using a 2 1/2 turbo muffler. But put a tip on it so it exits beyond the apron or guard. If you don't
the sound reverberates around the guard and makes the exhaust seem louder.
I hope that helps.

Im running a 1 5/8 header and a fatboy style muffler, sounds sweet, noisy inside but reading the post above I know why now...
I run a 1 5/8th inch extractors and a 2 inch straight through muffler and its very nice sounding and very loud, very loud!!!
