VW Beetle: MP3/CD Player Fitting and door clearance (for BIG speaker)
Kippa-Dee - April 19th, 2004 at 12:16 PM

Hey all.
Ok
a few queries here.

If I buy myself an MP3/CD deck for my bug (Havent got the bug yet)... it is possible to use any one isnt it? Or are there certain power/size/voltage/resistance/etc. constraints?

And for those of you with a bug, I play bass, and carry my own gear around, so need to know if I can get a speaker into the car.. It's rather large...and I may end up getting a larger one (4X10" cab)... Measurements of current one are: .42X.46X.57 (m) or 42X46X57(cm)... will I be able to transport it?

thanks,

Joel

there is always the back seat!

Anthiron - April 19th, 2004 at 12:45 PM

the back seat is the only place u will be able to fit it....as for the head unit...any unit will go in but u might have to widen the factory hole in the dash

Kippa-Dee - April 19th, 2004 at 01:42 PM

Ok...but will it clear through the front door so I can put it on the backseat?

And with the headunit, should I even bother purchasing one in advance, or just buy it after I buy my bug?

ronster - April 19th, 2004 at 01:44 PM

Hi there,

I had my CD player put in my superbug last month, the head unit space was big enough for it, not sure about non-super models tho...

Depends on whether the bug you are after is a 12V or 6V as well....

Ron

Kippa-Dee - April 19th, 2004 at 01:47 PM

I have no idea what bug I want! I'm 90% sure I'll be buying a bug for my first car, just wondering whether it's worth it buying the head unit now, coz I can't buy the car till I'm 18 (parents wont pay half till then). so far I've got $4000 for car all up, aiming for $5k :)
Lets just hope they don't say no and I can't get a bug :cry

Oasis - April 19th, 2004 at 04:07 PM

I put my 4 X 10 EV quad box in the back seat of my bug. Have to slide the front seat all the way forward though, but it fits fine...

Kippa-Dee - April 19th, 2004 at 04:27 PM

Thanks Oasis!

Oasis - April 19th, 2004 at 11:14 PM

a pleasure....

Anthiron - April 19th, 2004 at 11:26 PM

u can always take the seats out easily if they are on VW rails its pretty easy they slide right off.....i would hold off and buy your bug first.....get a 67 upwards so that u have 12 volt....or get a converted one.....superbugs are common and alot more modern than the older bugs.....a more modern drive and better handling and steering can pick up a good one for 4 grand easy.....u wont need your parents help

Kippa-Dee - April 20th, 2004 at 07:13 AM

No... I've got $2000, with folks help its $4000 :).
Thanks for all the advice guys!

Why not go for a Type Squareback wagon? When you hump big speakers around all the time, a van or a wagon is the only real way to go. A Kombi is another option that is well worth considering.

Having a 4x10 box is cool but what happens when you want to add a 15" or an 18" under it for a big gig? When playing in bands, big name or small name groups, you almost always have to carry more gear than will fit in your car. I never take the bass amp, pa or extra stuff in the Beetle, it goes in the 2003 Kombi which I apply in triplicate to get back from my wife for the evening.

To be practical, pro musicians own Vans or Wagons.

oval TOFU - April 20th, 2004 at 11:26 AM

yeh, I'd wait until you get your bug b4 buying the stereo. Prices of electronic goods can only drop with time. If you dont use the back seat (like most of us dont?) just take off the back rest and you can fit so much more in there... or get roof racks! (a bit un-aerodynamic though)

A squareback would be really cool if you dont have your heart set on a bug...

Anthiron - April 20th, 2004 at 11:29 AM

i dont think id want to put expensive audio equipment on a roof rack....if it rained you would be mighty pissed off

modulus - April 20th, 2004 at 12:22 PM

There's one VW Beetle that your bass speaker would *definitely* fit into; that's the VW Kombi Beetle!

With a Kombi, you could fit the bass, its speaker, the PA, rest of the band and their instuments, some firewood, your fan club, your other clothes, a back-up Ukulele and possibly a first-aid-kit.

Seek for bugs with Alternator and 12 Volt... or else you'll end up like me, seeking around for Alternator Kits which costs around $3xx exclude installation! And head unit for $3xx and speakers .. etc etc ... !!

Keep an eye out for the "Ukulele Look", coming soon to a website near you. It will make the "Rat Look" look ratty. Think of the sort of VW you'd be proud to drive while wearing a Hawaian shirt, with Gabby Pahinui playing slack-key guitar on the radio, to the smell of Frangipani...

Anthiron - April 20th, 2004 at 01:59 PM

ha ha ha ha ha ha i cant wait

I had to cut my dash for a Sansui Mp3 player, does the job, I have 2 200w kenwoods in the back, and no space for a sub :@

68AutoBug - April 20th, 2004 at 04:30 PM

You will Have to cut the Hole in the dash to the DIN Size which is what most CD MP3 players etc are these days.
I'm pretty sure its wider and higher than the old radio size..
I did mine with an angle grinder ....
You are restricted a bit in what size speakers will fit into the door panels... but most people put their large speakers in a board that fits across the dickie seat, under the rear window.
and many also take out the rear seats...
A Kombi or type 3 Variant is what You need I believe....
I had a type 3 Variant [squareback] for about 10 years... many years ago... they are great to drive...

I've sort of got my heart set on a bug however :(

I am a pro musician and I've got a bug... but you're right, It's not practical and I very occasionally use my wife's car if I need to. For me I'd rather drive a car I REALLY want to drive than one I need to carry gear in (I still love Kombis but not on a track). If you want a bug, GET ONE! It will fit with a little more effort than usual.

Canni. - April 20th, 2004 at 09:49 PM

if you don't want to cut the dash the mp3 players fit very well inside the glove box...also hides your radio from thieves...

Kippa-Dee - April 21st, 2004 at 07:19 AM

Good point Oasis, thanks

battybat - April 22nd, 2004 at 09:13 AM

get a rag top!

I can get my marshall combo, 2 guitars in hard cases, my pedals box, a full drum kit and two people into the sardine top, pop the roof, load it up and put the roof back on!

just don't leave anything in there, security is an issue

our bass player gets his stuff into a mini - but he has removed the front passenger seat - which is always an option!

Kippa-Dee - April 22nd, 2004 at 06:33 PM

Haha, can just tell my passengers to take a hike!

Hrmm.. How difficult is it to remove the seat? Is it a 5 or 10 minute job? May end up just doing that... or MAYBE a ragtop. 30 weeks till my bug :D (and my birthday)

Anthiron - April 22nd, 2004 at 06:39 PM

like a 30 second job mate....easy as pie..

Kippa-Dee - April 22nd, 2004 at 06:57 PM

swoit.. Might do that then :)
