Just began using my new MIG (Santa came early this year!)
Is it my novice technique or is it meant to be?: I find the fluxed wire (silver) much easier to use than the unfluxed (copper colour). I know the
former is for gasless welding but with the gas on (argon-lite) I can weld real well with it especially the heavy stuff. The copper wire stutters
& spits & seems to lack penetratiion.
Is there any reason I can't use the silver wire all the time esp with thicker metals?
I also got 1 of those super-dooper quick change clear to black-out visors. Man, what a quantum leap in quality. No more waving sticks in the dark.
Even my crude farm arc welder now gives prof. results- worth every cent!
depending on what settings you have the welder on can matter alot also what condition the steel is in if its rusty you will have trouble but clean steel clean welds. i have not used a gassless mig but from what i have been told they dont weld as clean as they do with gass. i dont know how much experience you have had welding but if you can stick weld mig wont be a prob.try not to let the wire get longer than 10mm and keep the nozzle clean ,stick is a drag motion and mig is a push forward motion. i hope this helps
Reverse the polarity and it will be fine when on Gas.
If you use the flux cored mig wire you welds will end up being brittle if Argon light is used as well. It welds easy with both cause it is not
pentrating that well.
Besides it will cost you a fortune. 15kg of .9mm copper wire is like $40 , 5kg of flux core is more like $100.
Thanks guys. It was set up with gasless wire in the box & I just changes the wire!
D'oh!
geodon, how does it go welding completely gassless?, this is something I want to try to avoid wasting money with those Gass supply companies.

glen keep fighting, it's no different to an old fashioned stick welder provided you've got one of those visors I described in my first post.

Compleyetl gasless ? You mean with noraml wire and no Argon ? or do you mean with flus cored wire ? If teh later they are fine as long as you
don't need heaps of penetration ie over 10mm
If the first then like shit .....
