Hi all

I bought a new set of external window scrapers for my 74 Beetle a couple of weeks back and have only just got round to having a go at installing them.

Trouble is I can't for the life of me figure out how they're supposed to work. I've tried Googling and searching the forum but haven't come up with any good clear guide on how to get them out.

Does anyone have any advice on how I might go about removing the old scraper + chrome without damaging the door, window or the rubbers. Hopefully once I find out how to actually get them out it will become more obvious how the new ones go in.

You have to drop the glass from the winder mechanism first. allow it to sit in the bottom of the door.

undo the rear lower baily channel next theres a screw in the door frame lower down.

remove the old baily channel felts from the rear of door and the top of door use a screw driver to leaver it out, i hope you bought new bailey channels as well.

undo screw holding the 1/4 window frame in at the top it was under the bailey channel before then give the 1/4 window a shove back and down to allow you to remove it.

now you should be able to use a paint scrapper to get between the inner scraper and the door to leaver it out and remove it.

do the same with the outer scraper but using yr fingers to push the trim clip out

sounds simple but take a lot of stuffing around

dont use the bailey channel clips to hold the outer trim in place use some self tappers and screw it down much better.

Looks like I have some more bits to buy before I can go at it then.

use a flat head screw driver wrapped in electrical tape not a paint scraper, this will let you work it harder before damaging any paint .

After you have all the trim out of the way. Place a strip of masking tape along the top of the door next to window opening and mark a line where each of the clip holes are on both outside and inside. this helps you when installing the new moldings.

The 1/4 window has to go in first. now is a good time to replace the rubbers on it as well.

Took me about 3 hours the other week to do a set for a friend.

Use plenty of masking tape around the window opening to protect the paint as well.
