I'm in the process of planning the process of putting a CD player and speakers into my Beetle (74), and am wondering where the speakers were mounted
by default? From a quick inspection, it seems there is a speaker mount behind the dashboard to the right of the speedo. Also it looks as though one of
the previous owners had cut speaker holes in the padded bits under the rear seat. I don't really want to stick speakers back there though, so I was
thinking of mounting them in the footwells.
A bit of quick Googling revealed that speaker panels like these: http://www.glass-action.com/bug.html#speaker are available and seem to be more or less exactly what I'm after.
Does anyone have any thoughts about the best way to mount speakers? I'm only looking to mount two fairly modest speakers in the front.

If you DO want to install speakers in the rear parcel shelf, 6X9's fit really well into an easily made MDF parcel shelf... The way the speakers sit behind the rear seat back rest also 'enhances' the bass (some physics thing)...

I have a 74L bug as well and I had a pair of 6x9" fitted recently.
I didn't wanna get my bug cut up so I folded down the parcel shelf cover and got a wooden stand made for the speakers.
Kinda similar to the rear speaker panel thing in the glass-action site. But the front speaker panel looks good. The only problem is you will have
limited leg room...

hey i have a 68 beetle and i had a preety big sterio in it i had the sub box behind the rear seat and i created it so i could vent the bass through
ports in the shelf i had my shelf on an angle whicck makes a real nice angle for nice sound with speakers i had 6x9s in the shelf u can stick small
speakers in the rear quarter panal trims or the front doors make good mounting places but u will have to make pods. I had my front speakers in the
kick panals in the front in custom pods. i must have done something right cause u could hear me streets away

ohh one more thing never mount a speaker on metal cause it vibrates and resonates and sounds like shit something i have picked up along the way
