Hi Guys,
I have just bought a 1970 Type 3, nice n tidy and very original. However the tryes are well stuffed, and need replacing. I was quite disappointed when
I discovered that the R15 rims are very narrow, limiting the width of tyre that can be fitted 165... I was hoping to keep the original rims for the
stock look, but aim for 205 or 215 width tyres. I have spoken to a bloke who widens the stock rims, but it is costly. I have also heard that Merc rims
may fit the 4 stud pattern and the VW hub cap can be fitted with some clip mods? Also I am not keen on redrilling stud patterns after reading earlier
posts. Also are there clearance problems when 205/215 tyres are fitted?
Can anyone shed a little light on this technicality? Any advice would be great!

yep ive got 5.5 and 6" rims on mine. it had 195's on the front and is lowered and scraped a bit around corners. now it has 165's and still scrapes so clearance is fine but turning a bit of a prob. it had 205's on the back and didn't touch at all. im going the other way gotta get back to 165's on the front and 175's on the back if theyll fit on a 6" rim.
I take it the 5.5 and 6" rims are not stock VW? I have seen a few dubs with the chrome EMPI rims, very nice, what $ do these normally go for?

An option is a porsche 356 replica wheel, i think u can get them in 4 stud pattern to match. they look close ish to stock and u can get them wide enough to have the wide tyres. Porsche 914 wheels will also fit and give u width
