Tow questions – Does a 1970 type 3 have an IRS rear end and what is involved in putting this and the late model engine in my 64 notch. Any response greatly appreciated

actually type 3's are completely different to the beetles. You don't need a new floorpan, or a major cut and weld job.

The rear susp of the type 3 is completely unboltable. the whole rear torsion housing unbolts.

The early swingaxle has frame horns like a beetle, and mounts the gearbox and engine similar to a beetle.

The later IRS type 3's don't have frame horns, so that they can run the wide auto gearboxes. No frame horns means the engine is supported another way. So they have extra mounts at the rear of the car.

To do the IRS conversion you will need to unbolt one rear end, bolt in the other, and then weld in some extra engine mounts at the rear.
