Only really want to know a couple of things:
1. Does anyone here in Aust sell them?
2. Are there different types available (and which one(s) are better for off road work)?
3. Any idea how much?

2.From what i've seen there are two types for a beetle gearbox, the ZF and the Quaife. The ZF uses clutches, whereas the Quaife is clutchless,
apparently the quaife is better. Also someone correct me if i'm wrong but didnt the country buggy come with a ZF LSD from the factory?
3. They're expensive about US$1000 from aircooled net, but i guess not that expensive if you are already building a big ass tranny

Swing axle ZFs are a bit like rocking horse shit. Rare, and expensive if you can find one.
The quaiffes are "torque biasing" diffs, they "sense" a wheel losing traction and direct it to the other. Quaiffes work only in acceleration and
act as an open diff on decelleration.
ZFs work in both acceleration and decelleration. ZFs are trickier to set up right, they lock up under power, can create an understeer situation due to
both wheels driving. Setting up the grip/ slip is a pro job.
The quaiffe is more suited to roundy roundy type racing, the ZF is great in a straight line. My understanding is Porsche still use the ZF, they tried
quaiffe and managed to toast a few.
ZF IRS diffs are available for about $1300 Aus.

Thanks for your replys ppl. I asked this question as my brother is having a new gearbox built for his Type IV powered Baja (the 1200 box that is in
it has started jumping out of gear and is getting worst by the day). As he does a fair bit of 'heavy duty' off roading and often ends up with one
back wheel of the ground whilst climbing some of the rutted tracks, he feels that an LSD is a good option to have included in the gearbox whilst it is
being built. I will show him this thread and continue to chase around....
...so it looks like there is no local (Aust) distributor for an LSD.... bugger, oh well, thankfully we have the internet!
On the subject of CB rears, did they all have the ZF LSD installed or was it an option? I have a CB rear that is slowly finding its way into my Baja,
but if it has a LSD, it will find its way in a lot faster!

From the little bit I have read about Torsens, I would guess that the quaife and a torsen would have the same net result. The design looks similar,
but not the same.
I have a ZF (IRS), once youve used one, you wont go back to an open diff, the traction difference is huge - also you can do much better donuts with a
LSD

....oh yeah, thanks AdrianH I will have to go and release the frozen/rusted up brakes before I can try what you have suggested - box is sitting on the
floor in garage but that shouldn't make any difference to the testing procedure - I'll let you know....
