How much power ?

Can anyone give me an aproximation of what kind of power i am making ?

1835
big valve/ported standard heads
standard rockers
number '2' (not quite race) cam
Dual kadron's
Standard, balanced, crank etc
Baja cannon exhaust

Thats a little lower than i thought ?
Still makes the idea of more power interesting. Car runs very well with this engine :)

An honest 100HP is difficult to achieve.

I think you'd be closer to 80HP, but with twin webers maybe you'd get closer to the 90HP.

I think a friend had a mild 1835, no headwork. He got around 55HP at the wheels. So about 70HP at the engine.

this isnt the setup that does 12's is it?? what was done to the 12 sec motor?

If i am ever lucky enough to own a beetle that does 12's i will certinaly get it dyno'd :)


Anyway what would you have to do ti get an 1835 to do 12's anyway ?

I'd guess around 70-80 hp as well, which as someone has already said, about 55 at the wheels.

But you'd be the one to know, based on how it drives. The same engine with high compression (say 9.5:1) and decent carburation (40 or 44 webbers) could produce 90-110 hp. A lot also will be determined by how much the heads are ported, and how big the valves realy are.

If the heads are 041's or 044's you'll probably have 40mm intakes and 35mm exhausts. These heads correctly ported can reliably flow nearly 200 hp. Standard 040's unless their modified have smaller valves and probably couldn't flow enough air to make more than about 75hp.

The cam and rockers are going to have a big bearing as well. You said a number 2 cam... This at a guess is probably about a 284 degree, .430" lift cam simular to a engle w110. This cam will produce power from about 2400-5500 in an 1835, but with stock rocker gear, probably won't flow enough air to be able to exceed about 80-90 hp (depending on the head porting as well).

The only real way to know is to go to a dyno shop. Though some shops are reluctant to put an air-cooled car on a dyno due to possible lack of cooling. So if you do, keep an eye on your temp gauge.

To be different, I'm going to give you an honest answer: no idea.

Provide some details such as cam specs (the 50thou numbers off the card, plus lift, should be fine,) valve sizes, exhaust diameter and compression ratio (and fuel,) and some may be able to give you a guesstimate. There are many factors to building an engine which must be balanced (or matched) against each other. For example; while Kadrons are theoretically capable of flowing about 150HP, if your heads were ported by the "bore a big hole straight through" method and you have and exhaust to match, you may never produce enough port velocity to make them "work."

If everything has been put together well, the 70-80HP figure seems about right, in an engine that would be real nice to drive - but without your cam specs it's impossible to guess.

I have no idea what the cam spec's are but if there is somone in wa who knows what volkswest sells as a number 2 cam they might have an idea :)


otherwise ill guestimate at around 85 horses as the port job looked very good

ie impressed my brother and the mechanics :)
