anyone in brisbane with some time to spare?
Starbug - May 19th, 2004 at 11:55 AM

hmmm... probably a long shot, but is there anyone in brisbane with a bit of time to spare this weekend/anytime soon who could come around and have a look/listen at my poor fragile bug, cherry? :cry

basically the problem is that shes lacking power (VERY MUCH, 4th gear gets me up to 40km/h and no futher) and there is the most Diabolical noise coming from just behind the drivers seat (off to the middle a bit), which happens when the engine revs above a certain range, in all gears and also in neutral.

This all happened very suddenly as i was driving home one afternoon, luckily i was almost home so i just rolled her down the hill.

completely stumped as to what this is, and am too scared to drive her to the mechanics incase something really F**ks up,
anyone interested in helping me out for a carton/bottle of spirits/as much dosh as i can afford? I live in paddington, ive got *some* tools and stands, i can make a fantastic cup of tea and love learning about dubs besides.

please u2u me if u can help.

is it running on all cyliders? ....have u checked the leads......im not saying u are stupid but it could be something simple

Starbug - May 19th, 2004 at 01:23 PM

hmmm... not stupid. checked all the plugs and leads, first thing i did. as far as i can tell its running on all cylinders, never experienced not running on all cylinders so i could be wrong... would love to find out.
i also thought it may have been a loose/oily/slipping fan belt. so i checked that too... nope, not that.
thought clutch cable grinding? checked and not that.
thought engine tin rattling... checked and not that.
ive checked all i can check:(

how can i explain this noise... i rev the engine (in neutral for example) and after i reach a certain rev range, i get this whirry crunchy grindy noise.
any ideas?

if its running on 3 cyliders the engine will shake violently as it is not balanced properly as the cylinders fire.

Starbug - May 19th, 2004 at 01:34 PM

ahhh... should have figured that.
nope, no shaking, so running on all 4.

Check ur U2u. also does it happen whent he cluth pedal is in? if so its probable in the engine area, as the gear box is isolated. just got to keep nutting away at it until you find what it is.

hmmm... interesting - very hard to diagnose noises by internet (without hearing them) but here is something else to check. Is the fan rubbing on the fan housing? Perhaps something is caught in the fan - it doesn't take much to make the fan vibrate and rub on the fan housing. The way I would check is to bring the engine up to 'that' speed (where it makes the noise) and try to wriggle the fanhousing back and forward (I know that your not silly but for safteys sake I'm going to add this: keep your 'bits' out of the belts and fan whilst doing this).

Just whilst I am thinking about this problem - are there any oil leaks that have appeared, or become worse since the noise has shown up? Does the noise change if you push the clutch in at the problem rev range? Just looking for clues....

Does it idle fine????

Rev it with the clutch in????

IF it sounds ok (obviously besides the noise - dóh!) then it is prolly g'box.

IF it sounds crap prolly motor

Where does the sound come from when you stand
- behind it??
- beside it??
