next week i am going to reset the valve clearances/rockers...i have done this on many heads but never VW motors...before i start is there anything i need to be aware of and a step by step guide would be good if anyone could help or point me in the right direction for a workshop type guide....

Set them at 0.006" COLD and you wont have a problem
