Does anyone know what the points gap is supposed to be? I know that with the standard distributor it is .016" (0.4 mm) but I have a feeling it
might be different for the 009. (?)
Also, since 009's are prone for flat spots.. what are their advantages (if any)? Would I be better off with a standard?
i run an 050 in my motors without any problem( both single or dual carbs).
point gap will be fine at .016"
try and get an 050 as i have seen them quite cheap
Thanks mate, I'll do my research..
009's are known for flat spots because they are centrifugal only advance. so when u mash the gas down, u have to wait for the engine to speed
up before the advance comes in.
with a vacumn advance it detects the increased throttle and advances the ignition to suit.
the 009 was never intended to work on aircooled vw motors. The stock vacumn advance dizzy will give you better response and fuel economy.
009's are notorious for bad build quality, its much better to use the stock vacumn advance for all the reasons above. There isnt much point in
using an 009, the only exception is that if u cannot hook up a vacumn signal.
If 009 dissy's are prone to problems such as flat spots / poor build etc why are they such a common modification ?
-Please excuse my ignorance-
I am and have been running 009's on all my engines for years and I have NO FLAT SPOTS ... if you tune your car right, get it jetted correctly and
keep it running right there is no problems.
Most of teh 009's I have seen having problems where either set wrong ie point gaps and had other engine dramas such as jetting or bad leads etc
etc ..
I would never go back to a stock dizzy.

yeah for a stock engine with an 009 i have heard of people getting rid of flat spots by running the carb richer, which sort of hides the missing advance.
I have a pict 31 on a 1500 sp
I have 40 DRLA twins on a 2L
Soon I will have a 32NDIX Zenith on a 2120 or a 44 IDF if the zenith don't pan out
I have also run 45 DRLA as a singl and heaps of Pict 34's
Never had a problem that couldn't be sorted.
I know a few VW mechanics who remove the vacum adavance on SVDA dizzy's cause they reckon they are more trouble than the are worth.

I actually saw in an old USA VW Mag yesterday the oo9 dizzy and the 050 dizzy..... and the 009 was a lot cheaper...
Vacuum advance dizzies are expensive so I am told.... 009's are an aftermarket item.
If You do go to a 009 and a Solex Carby, its best to time them with the engine running and time the actual advance.....
thats from memory... and My memory isn't the best today.. MY ...:birthday
Aircooled.net
SVDA $119 US + cap, rotor, points and condenser
009 $59.95 complete
One would assume there is a difference in something to justify the price difference - no?

Have to agree with Blue.
It is just so interesting pulling both types apart : the difference in quality is HUGE.
I am thinking of increasing the rate of advance on my SVDA and reducing the total of the mechanical advance component but that is because it would
suit a supercharger set up better.
However I would not leave one return spring out as is done in 009.
Would a 36hp single vac advance dizzy work on a 1600sp.???
I believe these are dual advance units too. Mechanical and Vac.
Dean the best one is the Mechanial advance one from a early Kombi.
I have one these early bus ones, but the advance is trashed. The rotor won't return fully. Can you rebuild these ones. Does it cost much.:thumb
when my dizzy got burnt in the fire i had to get a new one (1300) and my mechanic told me to get one with both vacuum advance and cyntripical
advance.
But when i went to the wreckers they said the 1300 dizzys didnt come with both only with vacuum. Is this true?
So I ended up getting a dizzy from a 1500 with both vacuum and cyntripical advance
Is this good?
Dean
theres not much in the dissys, probally just frozen up with gunk n rust. there easy to pull apart n free up n re lubricate.
you could get an old Auto Electrical shop to test it for you, buy there probally chucked the test machine away by now, because of all the new
computor EFIs etc etc
what about my dizzy guys did i do the right thing?
Sounds good to me... is your car running alright ??
