I have some early type 3 (big 5 stud configuration) drums on the back of my buggy.
I need to know the piston diameter in the slave cylinders and I don't feel like pulling them apart.
Can some one give me the specs please from a manual or something?
The fronts are mazda rx2 calipers on a John shermon disc conversion kit and they lock up abit to easy for my liking as there is not much weight in the
front.
I'm hoping that if the rear cylinders are smaller in diameter than a front drum slave cylinder that I can just put some front ones in the back drums
and shift some of the bias to the back brakes. I am using a t1/t3 twin circuit master cylinder.
Any ideas?

There either 17 or 19mm
According to my Bentley, the rear wheel cylinders are 22.20mm inside diameter. (The master cylinder is 19.05mm)
These brakes are the six-volt, wide-5, early type3, wagon, rear brakes.
Can you check again for me with this info cause I have two radically different answers from two different people.
My Bentley covers '68 to '73. None of my books which cover the earlier models specify the cylinder bore. Wish I could be of more help.

could you have another look and see they are 17mm or 19mm. The brakes are specifically the extra wide wagon variety, 6 volt, wide 5 pattern units.
According to the people on vwtype3.org the sizes are:
25.4 mm (1") up to July 63 then 23.8mm (15/16") to July 65 (for Squareback).

I think a bleed and a blow out of the hoses might be in order. Discussions with several learned VW mechanics lead me to believe that the whole back
system should be working alot better than it is. Can't figure it out though. The only 2nd hand bit in the whole setup is the main front to back
line.
Oh well, back to the work shop....... :o

The size should be cast into the outside of the cylinder, just need to take the drum off.
