Manifold / heat risers
vw139 - May 31st, 2004 at 12:35 PM

Well after much confusion and a new carby, I found that my twin port '73 SBug has a duff manifold with very blocked heat risers...I think this is causing some hesitation and bad running problems, does this sound right? After driving for 10 mins, the riser tubes were still cold over their entire length!

Anyone know where I can get a new manifold for my bug in good condition and reasonably cheap? Also is it a tough job to replace? can it be done with engine in the car?

cheers

What exhaust are you running???
Stock???

Some extractor/header set ups have blanked take off ports. They need to be drilled out.

Tís a bitch of a job with the motor in. You will need to take the generator and shroud off. Can be done.

Its easier to take the engine out and buy a new manifold, your wasting time with a Second hand one. there all blocked as well.

Its not that hard to fix it!

drop the engine and take off the manifold, get an old clutch cable and attach one end into your drill and shove the splayed cut end inside and drill away. Careful that yiou dont cut the cable too long or u could hurt yourself :) Clean out all the carbon, use some wd40 or something too.

make sure that the manifold heat riser is actually connected to the exhaust too.

U dont need to drop 300 on a new manifold. For a little more than 300 you could get dual carbies and forget about icing all together.

Or you could pull the muffler off and do what ^ said while lying on your back, tools needed goggles, drill, clutch cable and a stubbie holder(rugrat).:o
