I bought my sc ute as a '63. Then VIN No. puts it as April 62 manufacture.
I immed noticed the wrong type lge fr blinkers, & ,when they came out, I noticed the holes are as per '64 on & thought "well at
least they did it properly!" Then I saw that there are 2 holes under the front screen for washers but they've been bogged up.
I'm beginning to suspect a new front has been grafted on! Damn good job if it has- I cant see any signs of repair or damage!
Maybe more will be revealed when the paint comes off.

sounds familiar except on mine the cut the holes out with a tin can opener as they did elsewhere on the car :puke
i recommend to get a bead blasting done it reaveals alot saves heaps of time with stripping and at around $500-800 (depending on cirtain circumstances
etc) it reveals everything and i hope you dont have front end damage like me

I'll blast the underbelly, sure, but the big panels will get the paint stripper & wire brush treatment. The amercan forums are split 50/50 re panel warpage.:jesus
According to http://www.dropgates.com, the flat pancake fr blinkers started in '62! I've thought they were '65 on. Arghhh!! I've just spent a bundle buying a NOS pair of nipple blinkers!

I have a 57 standard kombi and that has the windscreen washers on it, I think they might have been fitted later, done a blooby good job as it looks
standard.
The front is standard and I thought they were fitted from 60,
Mabe Rob King can put us right.

Splitties built before Aug '63 have tittie blinkers and after had fried egg blinkers.
Windscreen washers came on '65 and later splitties.

Aussie Kombis had the bullet type Blinkers in late 1960-61 in Australia as far as I can remember... I thought they were unique
to Australia... the metal housing is welded to the front sheet metal .. and the lenses were clear ONLY.... the USA type bullet lenses look like the
same ones as used on the beetles over there from 1957, as the US didn't have semaphores.. I thought the US bullet blinkers on both beetles and
Kombis were the same and just bolted on.... same as on the early Karmann Ghias ...Not 100% Sure... same as We had in Aust [& italy] - the unique
& Very Rare 1960 1/2 & 1961 beetle tail lamps.... 50% amber- 50% Red and slightly smaller than the 1962 - 1967 tail lamp Assemblies..
I really never liked the FLAT blinker lenses on Kombies... from 1962 on in Australia...
Thats about all I can remember at the moment..... Some of it May be incorrect... I only have a 10MB Brain..

I have no reference but thought the fried egg indicators AND washers started in the 63 MODEL year (Aug 62 on).
(I can check Dave Eccles book which seems fairly authoritative...)
Dave I have seen a 63 (vin starting 013)
with factory washers.

My '64 ute dosen't have washers, but has egg blinkers, and I have had a '63 high roof ute with tittie blinkers and no washers too.
Maybe we were a bit behind the US
mmmm.....I do tend to think in US terms a bit I guess....
What drove my comment was that I was thinking of the 'changeover' year for 23 window buses. Last year was 63 (before the 21s in 64) and
that last year had 23 windows and the fried egg front indicators.
I have the 63 with factory washer bottle here at the moment.

According to the Vw Transporter and Microbus Specification Guide 1950-1967 by Dave Eccles.....
Euro Buses got the fried egg front indicator 63-67 and US busses got them in 1961!

ps...BEAD blasting (as opposed to sand blasting or garnet blasting) is a very safe process.....no warpage! Probelm is finding someone who can handle
something kombi sized (most bead blasting setups are contained recovery systems with a closed booth)
When I thonk about it the 63 bus with washers is imported. I think Oz busses did have a fair bit of variance with Euro busses in terms of changes
with model year (because of out local manufacturing and assembly)...
wouldn't surprise me at all that an Oz 63 had nipple indicators and a 64 Oz bus didn't have factory washers......very little formal stuff
around about our busses and what was made where and when...

Down here in tassie they have baking soda blasting which, I am told does not cause heat buildup and thus warping, Has anyone personal experience with
soda blasting? also
Both of my buses are "Australian" but both have Made in germany plates behind the drivers seat, How come?

Not all the parts of Kombis were made in Australia. Many of the panels were still shipped in from Germany and welded together in Melbourne. VWA
concentrated on getting the Beetle's local content up above 90% but the Kombi never got much higher than 50 or 60%.
I have a fair bit of Aussie Beetle documentation but yes, sadly there isn't much on Kombis.
The shot below says it all. You might go giddy looking at it. You can see the fresh air intake at the top so its an under dash shot. You can make out the windscreen wiper toggle. The rest is a line on pop rivets & plug welds showing where the new front has gone on. They painted it 1st (turquoise- don't you just luv'it!) but didn't bother going over it after the stitch-up!
There are some non-VW pop rivets clipping the new front on near the floor.
Geez! I've got 2 SC's & they both have had the new front treatment!
