Fuel sender, lever style to the alloy tube style?

My fuel sender is a lever style, but I have seen ones that are contained within an aluminium tube type thing. Can these be interchanged?

Not quite sure what you mean.
AFAIK the fuel sender is a variable resistor that has an arm attached with a float on the end. As the fuel level changes, the float moves thus changing the resistance. Different senders should be interchangeable providing the resistance range is the same if not then you can try bending the float arm and/or add series /parallel resistors to get an accurate reading on your meter.

The reason I ask is that I need to foam fill my tank and it's a bit of hassle with a lever style as you need to ensure that the foam stays clear of the device. I have seen some senders that are just a alloy tube about 45mm in dia with the float system enclosed. Yeah your right, changing the value of the signal isn't a problem.
cheers

the tube type are available in beetles. You just need to alter the gauge to read the different resistance that the tube type has compared to the float type.
