Baggy steering and a pull to the left?
Shrek - June 7th, 2004 at 04:50 PM

Can someone give me a little info on my steering issues.

1) A pull to the left and off center steering wheel, is this a tracking issue, easily solved by a quick trip to my local garage?

2) Very baggy steering, quite a lot of play in both directions before the steering becomes responsive. I read a post about adjusting the steering box, does this effectively 'take up the slack'?

Any suggestions very gratefully received.

Cheers

Pulling to one side could be a few things.

First check your tyre pressure as low pressure on one side can cause it to pull slightly to one side.

Check the alignment of your wheels, toe in, camber, castor etc. You can get this done at a VW garage.

Sloppiness in the steering can be attributed to worn out tie rod ends, ball joints and a sloppy steering box. The steering box can be tightened up with a screw driver, but it is limited. There should be a screw with a locknut on your steering box, which you can turn in - this should tighten up your steering, however once u reach the end of the thread of the screw, the box is worn and needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

Ah ha, tyre pressures. Easy to check, thanks.

I guess it may have to go in to have the wheels re-aligned.

hehe, yeah my 63 beetle has a bad habit of losing more pressure on the left side than the right. It also greatly affects braking, it will pull to one side as well. :D
