Hi there

increasingly lately my 72 sbug wont start.

i turn the key i hear the telltale click of the ignition

no starter. Battery ok

try a few times

then after varying numbers of trys it works properly

Any ideas

Is it faulty ignition. or starter?

sometimes it works first time.

Have also had some flat battery problems lately - dont know if thats connected

I had a similar problem with my bike, every so often you'd go to start it, hear the solenoid click but it wouldn't crank over. You could push start it OK. The problem got worse. Turned out to be a worn comutator and brushes on the starter.

check for corrosion on all the electrical bits starting from your battery ground strap, and ending up under your bug staring up at the leads going to your starter motor. clean em up nice and shiny and finish them off with a blob of vasso to stop them going bad. don't mix up the leads when you replace them. make sure your generator/alternator is charging the battery, and check that your battery is not dead. then go buy a new battery if it's more than 6-7 years old. In winter batteries lose some grunt so these problems tend to show up around now......
