Help anyone?

I have just found out that my recently purchased VW Transporter 94 model its Valeo Alternator is dead! Is this possible being only a young 10 years?

I have been quoted by someone for a second hand alternator $440 just for the part let alone the work to be done, can this be true?

Would appreciate some advice if there are any alternatives or if I am being ripped off?

where abouts are u from Is the alternator 90 or 120 amp ?
