I can't really give you any firsthand advice, but you should check out the DIY paint job info on http://www.thebugshop.org  it's very thorough.

I use a suction type gun but its 50 years old still works OK

One thing, buy plenty of thinners, so u have heaps to clean up everything. I usuall get a 25 litre drum.

Are you using enamel or acrylic ???
