Strange enquiry I know - but has anyone cut and rejoined rubber?

Basically, I want to cut the seal that surounds the glass in an early beetle headlight assembly so I can make it a smaller overall diameter, then rejoin the rubber together. Could you just melt it back together....any suggestions?? It will be for a spot light glass seal.

We make up "o" rings at work for special applications. All we use to join is "super glue". Just make sure that the joint edges are nice and smooth/clean/square when cut, use a very sharp razor blade. A dab of "super glue" on each end and pop em together.......now peel your fingers off the joint!!!!

yeah if you can get a Loctite product 401 from memory or a better brand quality super glue it makes life easier.

Yep, good old super glue is the stuff to use. Selleys is good, that's what i use, but model aircraft cyanocrylate (that's what super glue is) glue by the name of ZAP is the best. Main rule with ZAP is, don't get it on anything you don't want permanently stuck to something else. If you're glueing rubber, keep ya hands away and use pliers to position it. And if ya get the pliers stuck to the rubber, don't reef them off, cut them away with a knife, otherwise a big hunk of rubber will stay on the pliers...
