I like reading 4wd magazines (just for kombi destinations) and one thing i notice is that most of the serious competition type off-roaders are using odyseey's so they must be good. They usually run a main starting battery and two hooked up in tandem to run the high speed 24volt winches. They sound like they're bulletproof and they charge a lot quicker than normal lead acid batteries.I think the biggest drawback is the cost........but if you want the best......I'd get one for my dual cab.

That is not bad for what you get!! A couple of rally guys I know rekon the sealed/gell type batteries used to fail regularly. One guy has had numerous types fail and went to odyseey's 8 months ago and now swears by them. Even when his son wrote the car off the battery was still good!!! Thinks me will be getting them for my dual setup.....:thumb

Beleve it or not there are Odyssey batteries and there are Odyssey batteries. The ones you buy off Odyssey suppliers here in Australia are NOT any good in off road situations, as they don’t like the vibrations you get in a Baja or buggy. But all is not lost, you can get Odyssey batteries out of the U.S. or off some people who buy from the US for about $280.au (about $128us + fedx, tax and the like). In most other cars its much of a much ness between the to. This is not only from my experience but a lot of people that use them. Neal if you remember somebody coming to you about 2months ago looking for a battery because his new one stuffed up? Well it was an Aus/Odyssey. I know this will upset some people, but I have had a lot of problems and claims over this and this info is from Odyssey direct so call them!!!!

Now that I have said all that, I use the US PC-680MJ model and have no problems in any of the ones I have sold or the ones I have used. The last time I was running a Microtech Computer on the C32A 3.2L V6 Honda in the buggy with over 400w of lights. But now I’m going to 1916 VW motor with an alternator, I’m still going to run the same type (although it will be a new one).
If you need some Technical information the PC-680MJ has a 5 second Cranking amps (5SCA) of 680, CCA is 220 and it has a deep cycle of 25amp for 25min. the only other model that some people I know use is the PC-925JT it has 925, 5 SCA.

yes chris ,it was three weeks back I lent the above battrie .It did come back fucked for sure so I lent a new one he gave me a story that a cell had killed its self ?? this was a new one never used by me !

so
I had three tests done on the battrie different places .
all three said the alternator * regulator has over charged it *
So out of this I can say I will never ever lend another item ,I had to chase this to the end to get a replacement from the guy ,I must say he did come to the party with a replacement .But I had to call around to find it in the end .
say no more seagull

ODYSSEY BATTERIES, ya'll have come to the right place.
i worked for the largest odyssey supplier in australia in brisbane for a few months where it was my role to install, reccommend and repair/maintain damaged batteries. so here are the facts->

they rock. if they are taken care of i've seen them last for up to 8 years in taxi cabs and the usual life span is around 5 years.

essentials to keep battery healty-> keep as far away from heat as possible, limit vibration, recharge after use and MOST IMPORTANTLY, charge at (now i cant quite remember this but i think it is..) 13.5V or higher otherwise warranty is technically voided (as per instruction manual states). when a battery is undercharged it will suffer from sulphation which will clog and destroy the batteties plates. sulphation is practially irreversible apart from pulsing the charging energy in excess of 10, 000 times a second as opposed to a constant flow.

the odyssey battery will die within 3 years or less if not charged above that voltage, no exceptions. rear mounting the battery in normal passenger vehicles can cause dramas as due to the length of the battery cables, voltage drop ocurs. thus to get the desired volatge input the alternator normally has to be putting out like 14.5 volts or something, which happens in a small minority of cars say 5%. the battery can be mounted in any postione you want, sideways upside down etc, has a superior discharge and recharge rate due to its %100 lead plate composition as opposed to lead/tin batteries and is maintenance free. the acid is basically held in sponges betweend plates as opposed to a regular liguid battery. ummmmmm, what else, oh yeah size and cycle ability!

the odysseys come in several sizes ranging from motor bike size to tractor size. the motor bike sized one has enough zap to kick over a cranky size V8, and is often used in show cars hidden up under the front guards. these batteries are a good deep cycling battery but if you want it purely for that reason then get a speciality deep cycle battery as this is more a hybrid.

ummm thats about it really, if you take care of it as described then its a good investment.....

You might have missed something, airfooled, Street Machine reckon they're the duck's nuts for any vehicle that is stored for long periods (don't die like normal batteries...)

Desert Moose - July 15th, 2004 at 01:58 AM

Well the answer is not so clear, but their one of the best:thumb
