hey. i am wondering if when you get a 87mm piston kit for ya 1600 thus making it 1641 is it possible to turbocharge this engine. or would you have to slip ya 1600cc kit back in?
Hi
The 87 mm bore kit has extremely thin wall thickness, either go 85.5, 90.5 or 94.

Take a look at iswinkels site
He turboed a 1641.
Check this thread out - his new engine

i do not want to have to replace the crank. if i were to get the 90.5 or 94 i would have to?
it might be a good idea to get a counterweighted crank, it takes the pressure off the main bearings and the engine spins smoother.
If you want to go to 90.5/94mm pistons you have to machine out the case for the larger cylinders - this requires splitting the case so you might as
well rebuild the engine.
case already split. engine is completely in bits.
and also. with a longer stroke. wouldnt its power come at higher rpm thus losing some low down torque?

and also. if i were to change to a bore of 94 and stroke of 82, giving me 2275cc?. what else would need to be changed?
71 you need to look at the * search section ,top left * try that ?
The cost on what you are asking is big $ / time / some good hand skills & tools .some times it may be best buying a motor from some one ,say like
Dave Becker ( HI DAVE ! ) has a nice motor for sale ( for sale section ). From what I have seen and read does some very fast motors , that hold
together.
With this you may have to up grade the gear box as well close ratio strong gears ect .
turbo kits most with out pipe work are around $1500.00 ,then on top add the fuel injection ect ect .
what ever you are doing to a vw motor is $ .
I know the following of air cool is strong ,but if you want to spend around the $1500.00 > $2500.00 ( motor ) get some thing like a subaru 1.8
turbo sure you need an adapter plate, radator and a few motor items >have a look at the post I did for you * ej20T * there is a price list there
,give you some ideas .
You may well find a low K 1.8 turbo in the east ? I would have a look could save some $ in the end . or the one in Perth for sale ,I know the guy nice
chap .
You could alwas turn up at a H20 meet and have a glass of * coke * 17 you are ? its at a pub .talk to some of the guys like Simon / mark ect they will
give you the guf .
seagull out

haha yes...coke. WITH JIM BLACK. but yeah. lol. i was just saying. in order to take it out to say 2275 wat MUST be replaced?.
your bank account with about 7>9 K
you need to replace the case , crank , rods , have a look at other posts on this RACERS posts my hp ect I will bump it
The longer the stroke the more torque...big ass crank keeps on turning...If you havnt been in a big stroked type 1, you will be very suprised when you
do....
Buy a drop in engine kit from cb or scat for about $800 US and get your case stroke relieved....do a home port job on your heads...a set of
webers...engle 120...and a merged header system and your 2275 will be a reality...Not too expensive either.
Then go visit Neil for your turbo and you will lift the front wheels when smoking wrx sti's.
Matt
I just thought i'd throw back an answer to the original question as to whether the 87's would handle turbocharging.
Well the answer is yes, with out any problems at all. Yes they are thinner than the standard 1600cc pistons but they are forged, where "most"
85.5's are not. Piston strength being more important above 6000 RPM than wall thickness.
I've run 17lb boost on my engine for short period of time, and now run 15lb as a daily driver 1641cc on premium fuel. Keep in mind that the engine
isn't running 15lb all the time, as you run out of road pretty quickly. Provided its tuned properly and not pinging, the 87's are just fine.
On a cool evening like we've had up here recently (8 degrees around 11pm), the car got second gear wheel spin in straight line acceleration around
4700 RPM, so the power output has got to be close on 190-200hp. I also broke the front spot welds on the seat mounting rails from the floor pan...

Compressed intake air temp dropped about 22 degrees or so, (not that I had time to look at the gauge). Thus the benefits of intercooling... cheap
horsepower...
Above 200 HP however you realy want to go 90.5's or larger so you can run copper head gaskets and eliminate any leakage that might occur.
That's all,
Matt , I take him for a spin in the toyota 3gti he will then not want a vw but a 71 corolla on drugs , I get scared driving it ! got to change my
jocks !
to find the corolla you will need to a search on the web
toms corolla page
very good read , I doing the diff set up now as I just can not get grip on the road , so in with a air locker I think . sorry away from your post and
not vw related guys .:thumb

mate. what was the cost of your turbocharged 1641?. and wat was changed. i am really interested in this conversion.
and where can i ring for a quote of getting case stroke relieved?
thanks. its my birthday in 25 mins . YAYA. im off seeya's
Hey '71, msn me some time and we can chat about it.
Cheers,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY 71.....
(what did you get?)
If you are only doing to run a 1641 why do you need it stroke relieving. It all depends on the crank you buy...Cb drop in kits up to 78 stroke do not
need to be clearanced(pretty sure). It is just removing small amounts from the roof of the case...do a google search, I am sure there will be pics..If
you are in perth, then Seagull could probably do it If you are not confident.
Good Luck,
Matt

what is mmm..???? and hmm yes. not bad. hahah. what sort of performance would u get down the 1/4 with say an EFI system like the one in the for sale section and a T3 turbo?. compared to the system on http://www.lowbugget.com ???
