yeah CB is also making one and so are a couple of US companies. I have heard the actual machining on some of these new cases isn't really that good, like the dizzy drive isnt properly aligned & stuff. might as well go use the Factory designed and long proven aluminium case, the Type 4.
Unfortuneately Dave i think it is more of a case of the public saying "i want new and i want it cheap"
There have been several new cases available but they are dear. This topic was blown to death several times on the STF had had to be shut down several
times. It makes great reading
Buy a Kombi with a 1700, 1800 or 2000cc engine...they already have pure aluminium crankcases.
I think our sponsor Micks Motors sells those new Al cases. Not sure which brand though.
Well Stan Pobjoy has used Ten Aluminium cases this year for customers wanting the added benefits and strength. All have been full warranty motors,
most being his "Steriods"1916cc option, all having no problems.:thumb

I got one coming too!! Just gotta decide whether to make it a 'baby' 1916 or go the whole hog with heads n Webers.. $$

Haven't seen one myself, but the magazine articles mentioned only one area that needs to be checked that you usually wouldn't on a new case
- clearance for the distributor drive. The new VW cases are of a lower standard of finishing these days anyway, and apparantly these come from the
same factory.
If you're building your own engine and don't have the article, I'll post a link, or a copy of the relevant portions for you.
As someone mentioned; Stan the man uses them, and we all know how meticulous he is, so I wouldn't pay any attention to stories of
"misalignment."

Yeah - I might do a 'baby' now, with the right bottom end, and add the heads and Webers (or EFI) one weekend... after I sell a home unit to pay for all the restos and projects lying around here!!

Am I wrong or are they not filled in behind number 3 cylinder either....
I thought this was a weak spot on the magnesium cases that was dealt with on the late Fuel injected ones by filling in between the ribbing. Surely it
would be a good idea for this piece to be filled in? Especially as this is the bit that gets real thin when the case is opened up for 94's
(please correct me if I'm wrong....)
I've also thought about these for future plans perhaps- as the cost of machining a case here is really expensive- the cost of a new case thats
machined in the states is actually not that much more- including the freight.... And it's new.

there have been bad alu cases in the past but i think now the quality companies have fixed the problems....
Jeremy, Stan Pobjoy has just completed a 1916cc Aluminum cased motor for the New Zealand Hillclimb series, this will be in a superbug starting next year, will find out details of the car , maybe you could go and have a look?
Brad is running an Al case in his buggy, so it is sure to get a good testing

I have one in my Manx with a 76mm crank. It is cool so far. Only got about 3000km on it but it is behaving very well. No leaks, no problems. I cleaned
up a few small dags, all of about 5 mins work. Everything aligned well and fitted great. I am more than happy with it and reckon it will give me years
of happy motoring.
Mick Motors was a great deal of help with supplying it at a good price. I have read good and bad reports on them, but liek the 92's don't
believe everything your told.
I would strongly recommend using one if you are going to build a tough engine. If you have to get machine work done on the case anyway why waste money
on an old one which might crank in a week.
Out of interest what are you guys paying for them landed ?
