It goes up but I can't get it down....

OK, someone must be able to advise me how to get around my problem.

The jack in my 69 bug is the mechanical version of a Monty Python skit. It takes great pleasure in looking like it is working, and then stabbing you in the back at the end!

It is pictured below. Only had the car a few months, used the jack once in the garage, goes up fine, but how do I get it down? Eventually found I can get it down with a hammer but it ain't a pleasant way! Advice please!

there is another notch on the side of it, that you put the handle inthen push dwon on the jack piece. it releases the jack. harder you push the quicker it comes down.
hope i ve explained it well enough for you to figure it out.

as 2gs said. There is another " pivot" point on the other side. It releases the pressure off by forcing it to straighten its grip. It is a rather violent release. Sort of drops it down the shaft until it grabs again.
It certainly aint like a bottle jack where you can slowly wind it down.

OK, will give it a go in the morning and see if I can work this fandangled thing out. Thanks to all for the advice! My daughter will be happy that I won't need to go near the bug with a hammer anymore....
