This is on the wife's '69 Merc. I adjust the dwell angle to 40 as recommended in the handbook. Runs like a dream for awhile then it loses all power
and runs like a dog. Most likely when gets hot but not everytime. Last time it did that, I checked the angle and it changed from 40 to 27. I took it
to the mechanic who set it to 40 again. It took me to Lorne and back (more than 350klms) then it played up again today. It stalled and wouldn't start
then after a while no probs. I am going to replace the points AGAIN and condenser as well. Would it be the condenser or the coil or something else?
help please
is the plate the points screws to stripped so the points are coming loose enough to change or am i just waffling on:thumb
sounds like a plug lead
Definately a distributor problem if the dwell changes from 40 to 27 degrees....
.
if the condenser is faulty... it can be the cause of buildup on the points themselves, which does change the dwell angle...
and drives You crazy at the same time....
so I would change the condenser and file the points or replace them if they are pitted or have buildup on the contact surfaces... and that should
fix the problem....
OR...
Can the distributor itself move???
or is it something inside.... a broken spring?? on the advance
Condensers can play up at any time .... when Hot... when cold.... anytime....

Dizzy is not moving because the timing is still spot on. Points don't seem to be moving either. Maybe its the build up then. So sould I leave the
coil alone for the time being?
Raf
Yeah, condensor could cause that.
Replaced the condinser & points. Worked ok for couple of days then the same crap again. What now?
