noises coming from my gearbox.....Not cool!....HELP PLEASE
Anthiron - July 15th, 2004 at 04:27 PM

well i took the plush pile carpet off the floor in my baja and just have mats down however this has left me with noises that i couldnt hear before.

a) squeaks that appear to come from the passenger side heater channel area...(not too concerned about)

b)a bit of crunching in the syncro of the gearbox (not too worried its an old box and the syncro is prolly goin in it)

c)when i change up a gear and let the clutch out sometimes it makes a scraping noise for a second or 2. (not sure about this)

d) in neutral if revved a little bit it makes a very faint whirring/whistling kinda sound which rises and drops with the revs. this is simialar perhaps to what VWFOOL had with his box.)

e)the gears generally clunk a bit when changing.

as far as i know the gearbox is a 1200 box but i couldnt really be sure.

how do i check the gearbox oil level and how do i top it up/change it?

am i being a worry wart? please tell me i am........Please:cry.......i dont want my car to be fuxxored and i dont want to miss valla in him.

well on the left side there should be a oil plug that takes a 17mm hex key. you can use a bolt with a 17mm head and 2 nuts locked together on it, or just make the jump and go and buy a 17mm hex head socket. this will tell you the level, it should be up to abou this level, stick a finger in and see if you can feel the oil. to drain, shuld be a 17m hex drain plug ont eh bottom, open , collect oil, place back in, then fill from side one. When filling see if you can get a bottle with a pull out tube on it or use a long piece of tube and funnel, and warm the oil in the sun it will make it go in easier!!!

mine was like that for a while after I ripped out my carpets, then I got used to the "normal (yeah right!)" noises and only heard the new or funny ones. Those noises sound similar to mine i think.

Doesn't sound too bad to me.
The whirring is alright, as long as it's not a howl or a grind as far as I'm concerned.
As for the noise after upshift, two questions:
Do you have any meat left on your clutch?
How's the thrust bearing?

when you drain the oil look at it in the light cheak for tiny gold coloured specks as this is the wear on the second gear syncro most VW boxes have this problem mine does so I double shufle into second so its smooth until I can change the box.
