Hi all,
My distributer is not advancing - therefore my motor runs like crap
It is a vacuum/mechanical type. I tried out my spare 009 (full mechanical type) and it does a similar thing, it advances a little then sticks then
after a bit of juice and spluttering it goes advancing again.
Any ideas, what is the correct dizzy for my 2lt Dual carb manual motor, I may have to buy a new one.
Thanks guys and girls.

I don't know the correct distributor for a 2 litre engine, but the 009 is only a stop gap replacement as the original VW type Vacuum/Mechanical
distributors are very expensive, even in the USA....
and the 009s only work with revs as You know...
There are Mallory and other types for sale in the USA that are also "Pointless" and have electronic ignitions etc...
The 009 should advance to around 32 degrees...
but, naturally will NOT be as good [fast] as the original...

my 009 has a flat spot like what you are talking about.......are u sure its not your carbie? i rebuilt my 30pict and it didnt fully get rid of it but it reduced the flat spot. id say that if the vacumm advance dissy isnt working then its your carbie not the dissy.

Check your accelerator pumps.
Check your spray jets.
Could have a hole in Your accelerator pump diaphram....
The 009 distributor only advances by revs... so if the accelerator pump isn't working correctly, then the 009 will NOT Advance correctly... they go
hand in hand....
The accelerator pump in normal PICT Carburetors is connected by a small shaft with a spring around the shaft..
and goes into the diaphram housing held on with 4 screws...
its a square shaped diaphram... and it squirts fuel out of a small arm that is just pressed into the carby...
Here is a diagram of a PDSIT Solex carby usually used in Kombis....
the accelerator pump jet is the small arm at the top....
they have a ball bearing that blocks up easily in PICT carbies, not sure with the PDSIT carbies though...

Thanks 68Auto and Madeline,
I have rebuilt my PDSIT carbies which included removing the ball bearings in the accelerater pump circuit and honing there seats as the accelerater
pumps where spluttering a little. I also used new carbie kits on them and had the main throttles rebushed on both.
As far as checking the spray jets and there quantities all I could do was measure the amount of fuel being pumped from each carbie and adjusting the
pump arm until they both were the pumping the same amount.
Completely disassemble the distributor, checking as you go that the upper and lower halves of the shaft are completely free, and that the centrifugal
weights are functioning correctly with return springs. You can check the vacuum mechanism by sucking on the pipe where the manifold vacuum hose
connects. Reassemble the whole lot, ensuring that the centrifugal advance springs do not dislodge during assembly, and ensure that the shaft is
lubricated.
I had the same problem last year at Valla and Boris from VVDS helped me rebuild it on the spot, and its still running fine a year later.
Thanks Kruizin, ironic you say all that. I just did that this afternoon to my Vacuum/Mech dizzy. Both return springs had there plastic/nylon anchors
on the posts, no shaft play, very little axial play, replaced the broken vacuum can with a good one, shaft spins very well, top advance plate turns
smoothly.......so i dunno. I think I better take it to a shop and get them to find the problem......for $50 hour
THanks to all, I will post what the problem was when I find the problem
FOUND THE PROBLEM......oops
my bad
the vacuum line from the manifolds to the brake booster had a crack in it.
There you go that simple.
