petrol advice for new van owner
surfvan - July 21st, 2004 at 02:21 PM

I've just bought a 1984 Caravelle Tran84a Van and am wondering what advice anyone would have for petrol. Would it be better to run unleaded premium with lead replacement additive or super lead replacement fuel? Or just the straight unleaded? Any advice on the best maintenance of this model would be great

Thanks

Just use premium unleaded, no additive needed

yep, what Dave said. You can run normal unleaded but it will probably ping it's guts out. Anything with an alloy head already has hardened valve seats and guides which is what gets eaten on leaded fuel engines that have cast iron heads, so you can basically safely run any fuel but diesel as long as it's not pinging.

you'll get better mileage and power out of PULP than LRP as well.

Thanks guys,
No pinging so far, didn't know that the engine had alloy heads.
I suppose the additive is a waste of money then? Or would it help with the engine's longevity?

it would help and it does make it go better but it's not a "must have"
