Super padded dash
duncombemu - July 23rd, 2004 at 08:23 PM

I need to know if there's any books or mags, or anyone, who have any hints on how to remove the padded dash on my 1973 Super bug. The problem with the one that's there, is it's all cracked. How do I remove it and replace it with a new one?

ooohhhh..... not a job for the faint hearted!

Taken a couple out - never put one in though.

It is trying to line all the vent hoses back up that would be a killer.

When i took them out the tubes that connect to the demister etc just split and broke.
There are a few hidden screws to find on the dash as well.

Are you going to replace it or repair it??

I would suggest getting a spare and having a good look at that first

I'm just wondering what it'll look like, if I choose to get it repaired. Aren't all the parts that break, available from someone like West Coast Metric (VVWS) or Mick Motors? What about just leaving it out and putting a flat type dash back in like the earlier Beetles, so I can customise 'its look'?
Thanks blue74l, for your reply.
Regards,
Mark

hey - if you dont mind doing it - DO IT!

I had a Super that the previous owner went to the trouble of changing the dash AND IT LOOKED GREAT!!!

Just a real big job from what i have seen in taking one out.
The one i had was reskinned in grey and it really set the car off.
I am sure the parts are available or replaceable

DO IT!

The dashes can be repaired to look better than new....

Some of the demister vents are hard to find and no longer available... it took Me a few years to find one of my vents which is different to other models...

whats under a 73 dash, I don't really know...
I have seen a few that have been modified and look great...

I don't know who repairs them. A good second hand one will set you back $300-400. To much for me, I got a black carpet cover and stuck it on over the top. It looks nice enough and cost $70 or something, not that expensive.

There was another thread about this about a week ago...

There are several re-skinners around.

There was one in Queens Road - 5 dock and they did skins for like $275.

A L bug with a NEW dash REALLY sets it off. I certainly wouldnt pay $400 for a good 2nd hand one.

I will search if you like for places that reskin then if you cant find one
