looks like i've found a body now to rebuild. ok i've already got the engine ( 2L kombi) and brakes covered. that leaves suspension and gearbox. the stock box is alright but needs some strengthening. any ideas are welcome but remember its a 72 sbug.

Have a chat to Alex Holzl's dad Richard @ V Force.

If you can search for a few of Alex's posts you will see Deiter's car - a snot green 72.

There is LOTS you can do
Struts first
select a decent set of wheels
brakes

Give him a call and get a package set up

Also have a read in the Club Vee Dub profiles on Jak and Steve C's cars.

They are both 1302's and set up in a similar way - ie adjustable struts etc etc

ive got a set of empi 8 spokes already and the brakes will probably be the same set up as my first one which was a stock set up with brake boaster in the system. but im always up for new ideas.

Che Castro - July 27th, 2004 at 03:07 PM

what kind of booster did you use? I've considered one in the past but a lot of people have said that its unecessary for a 700/800kg car

barls - July 27th, 2004 at 03:11 PM

vh 44 i think i did it cause i needed to upgrade the brakes for the engineers for the 2L

Hi

He wanted you to put booster on? Thats a strange way to do things, why not rear disks? With that line of thinking (booster) you still have the same brakes underneath, no improvement just less effort.

Go with the skinny struts, best thing you can do to a S or L bug, also fit urathane bushings to the front end with an adjustable caster bar.

barls - July 27th, 2004 at 10:16 PM

ok thanks ill look in to what im doing, but im definately dropping the front a couple of inches.

1303Steve - July 27th, 2004 at 10:36 PM

Hi

With adjustable struts you can get it exactly where you want it.

barls - July 27th, 2004 at 10:43 PM

i was just going to turn the spring base off a set of stock struts and rewield them lower

1303Steve - July 27th, 2004 at 10:50 PM

Hi

You also need to shorten the struts and fit shorter shocks. Otherwise when you lower it you run out of travel.

barls - July 27th, 2004 at 10:54 PM

ok im having trouble getting the vintage veedub webpage is it just me?

Che Castro - July 28th, 2004 at 08:52 AM

Ford Falcon rear discs are pretty cheap and easy to fit (not much modification) for rear discs. They're good cos they are meant to stop a 1500kg car :)

barls - July 28th, 2004 at 09:07 AM

i dont want to change the sttud pattern as ive all ready got the wheels

barls - July 29th, 2004 at 09:45 AM

ok the best way to strengthen the gear box would be?

barls - June 10th, 2005 at 09:27 AM

ok dreging up this one again with the gearbox i also want to cruise at lower speeds so would changing to a 3.88 R&P from a 4.25 be the best way of doing this. also where would i get a heavy duty side plate as well

1303Steve - June 10th, 2005 at 09:34 AM

Hi

Best way to get a 3.88 is buy a 3.88 box, but 4th gear still works out about the same RPM v speed. You need to to change gear sets to get what you want, can get pricey.

Side plates, coming from the leading high performance VW gearbox builder in Australia (not me), the late model stock ones are better that the heavy duty ones.

Steve

barls - June 10th, 2005 at 10:11 AM

so the plates off a 1303 box are better than the heavy duty 1302 ones. ok ive got a spare 1302 box how hard would it be to change out the r&p to use the later 3.88 one. who in oz in building boxes steve cause i have no idea

1303Steve - June 10th, 2005 at 10:18 AM

Hi

In the Sydney area there only people I trust, Shimmo at Dunhams in the Gong or Henry, who built my box.

The 1303 side plates have extra ribbing in them, its best to just find a good 3.88 box.

Steve

barls - June 10th, 2005 at 10:24 AM

ok thanks mate thats just made it alot clearer for me. what i might do is get a 3.88 box and put the 4th out of the sbug box in it. cause its going with a t4 2L im building

ColumBUS - June 10th, 2005 at 12:15 PM

ill second the recommendation of dunhams.

barls could you send me some info regarding the kombi motor swap?

barls - June 10th, 2005 at 03:24 PM

u2u sent fish man

barls - June 14th, 2005 at 12:53 PM
