I was driving my bug last night when i noticed the red generator light go on (little G in a circle on the speedometer?). It has stayed on since (only
when ignition or engine is on).
Now i got out "How to keep your veedub alive" and it says something about the fan belt slipin or being broken.
So how do i check fan belt? Is it inside that big black box at the back of engine compartment? If it is how do I get to it???
confuzzled. Any help would be appreciated...
hmm book also says that there a chance there is a problem with the generator :/

thankyou very much
most helpful.
out of interest, is an alternator or a generator better? or they pretty much as good as each other?
ive been having the same hassle with mine
the light stays on and the auto electrician said the field coils were gone in it then i tried another I had and it was the same then I bought a
supposedly good one and it was gone also. theyre getting pretty old now and for about $235 you can have a brand new one delivered to your door by mick
motors our favourite sponsor
thats what I'll be doing next week!
get yours checked out by an auto elecrician they'll be able to tell you if its brushes, the regulator or its cactus
the auto electrician I took it to actually used to race beetles so it was a double bonus!

thx rota! :o (ive decided this face looks like a "phew")
weeee now i can drive my car around again keke.
argg!!!!
well i bought myself some new brushes this morning, put them (red light went off :thumb) in and drove to school... ok as im driving along i can here
my brand new brushes rubbing, ok im not too worried as i figure this must just be normal..... well i get to my destination go to the rear to have a
look and low and behold...
The damn brushes are about 1cm long again and the bloody generator light is back on :cry
is it because the spings are too strong? or is there somehting wrong with my generator
??
the sparking is normal that is what u want to see....i dont know about your brushes being worn down........perhaps the brushes were to skinny and they were sliding through the mounts and wearing away to quick or the springs are sprung too tight. are the brushes loose in the mounting holes?
brushes aint loose, they are the right ones for the model as far as im aware :/ i have to go out now so i might go look at the springs :S
not impressed however the damn brushes cost me $12 and im just poor wittle student (sob story)
my genny wasnt charging when i got the baja and after a bit of frigging around i discoverd there was too much friction in the brush mounts from surface rust that was forming there after i emery paperd that down they were fine.....id say the springs are too tight.
