I was driving home today and the bug started to splatter, i thought it was out of fuel, swaped to the reserve tank but still a problem. The long and short of it is that it won't start now, had to tow it home.

The is petrol leaking from the base of the carbi....my question is??? Is this likley just to be a seal and if so are they cheap....i don't have any money and need to drive...

Please help!!!!

mate i had a prob like this it was flooding the flot was full of fuel
and was leaking out the base every where
worth a look btw what engine do u have?

thanks mate, looks complicated, might get an expert to do it... I would love to try it all one day but thisis the only car we got so don't want to stuff it even more

The float could be stuck; give a few hard taps on the side of the float bowl with the blunt end of a screwdriver.

Otherwise, many times I've just stripped carbs down and blown the jets and passages through with WD40 aerosol with the straw thingy attached.

check the float at the same time.

It works for me.

They are not that complicated

yeah carbs are usually very easy to rebuild, its more a matter of cleaning and changing gaskets. The only hard bit is getting the throttle linkage tight, it might need to be reamed and bushed, which u probably can get done at a carby shop

WD40 can get gummy. use carbie cleaner...a gizillon times better.
from super cheap, of any auto store...even seen it a super bargins (cheapy shop in melb)

Before you rebuild the carby, give it a quick degreese and determaim where the leek is. Its quite common for late beetle carbs to have like a disk at the front about half way down. If its loose or hase fallen out (somtime still sitting in the engine bay) it can leek badly and then start sucking air causing a similar prob to what you've got. if this is the prob beleive it or not you just use Aredite or a two part epoxy glue, it would seem that its petrol resistant. And by the way clean the area well be you glue.

thanks everyone. It is all sorted now. Had the guys at Custom off road have a look. Was all good for a day then started flooding again. Replaced the needel and seat and it is good so far.

The good thing about things going wrong is i learnt a lot about how my carb works and how to fix it.

So from a new dubber to all you experienced ones. Cheers.
