Yeah I know it serves a purpose - but at the moment for me all it does is apart from warms up the motor - it operates everytime I start up making the Dog's mill idle at 2000 revs for three minutes even after the shortest of stops - like to get more fuel to feed it.

Not only is it embarissing but its dam right expensive. I have a pict34-4 with the electrical warm wire coil on the side (- in case there are other types of auto chokes on VW carbs).

If possible I would still like to have the choke operate in the mornings - say manually but then turn it off when running around through the day.

Any advice...

If my memory serves me correctly, 1960's 356 Porsches have no chokes at all. They suggest that for cold starts you prime the carbs by pumping the pedal!
Apart from that maybe you could rig a light spring to pull back the fast idle cam( & therefore the choke flap) once you have got going in the morning. The spring should be strong enough to overcome the heat sensitive spring that activates the choke.

The auto choke is a perfectly good system, even up here in Qld.
You just need to get it working properly.
Is the choke butterfly free? how far does it close when the choke is on? How far is the fast idle screw wound in? The Pict 34 have a seperate idle speed screw on the L/H side of the carb, not the one on the front like the earlier carbs.
