Largest motor in a Type 3
NigeType3 - August 12th, 2004 at 02:06 PM

Hi all I just want to know what you would recomend as the largest size VW motor I would be able to run in my Type 3 Square back. It is to be a dayly runner but want to go to the motorplex and not be to shammed by low times. I have already striped interior bumpers etc to make the car as light as posable.
I have had advice to not go over 90.5mm bore size due to heat buildup. But at the same time advised to use a stroker crank. I thought this would cause just as much if not more heat buildup than say 1916 motor. Any advice would be a big help. Cheers Nige:)

Tazz on here has a 1916 in his fasty which goes quite well.
There is also a fasty in Melbourne with a 3.8L holden V6.......

NigeType3 - August 12th, 2004 at 02:39 PM

Tazz if your about could ya let us know if there is anything I will have to modify to keep the think cool enough. I like the idea of a Pobjoy 1916. And VW only for me.

Stanley - August 12th, 2004 at 02:46 PM

There was a fasty last year at VW action day in Brisbane that was almost finished that had a turbo'd engine in it. Can't remember what displacement it was but it was an awesome looking ride.
I'm sure somebody must know of it or there might even be some photos if you do a search.

VWFREAK - August 12th, 2004 at 04:04 PM

I had a T3 Ute with a T4, 2L grafted into it. Use a T4, stroker, big barrels and a lumpy are cam and the times will improve.

Do do need to do a little bit of engineering to get the T4 in there.

barls - August 12th, 2004 at 04:07 PM

does the type 3 have a narrower engine bay than a bug cause i have a t4 in mine and only had to do the cooling tinware

Midlife crisis - August 12th, 2004 at 04:22 PM

I have seen a 2L kombi motor in type 3ad to do a bit of work to sort it but i goes real good.

Give Mid Coast VW in offs a call he has it in his type3 square

Wouldn't the kombi motor be rather heavey and I would have to change my gearbox as well.
Id rather just change motors with a more tricked up type 1.

What dose anyone know how running short manifolds with IDF 44s will change the power delivery.
Dose it a) provide more torch in the lower rev range and less power up top or
b) less torch down low and more power in the top end.
Cheers Nige

a t4 is not much heavier than a big type 1 engine and use the same box

Tazz - August 12th, 2004 at 05:13 PM

1916cc.....
Ported & polished heads (You can almost fit a large egg in them..)
Twin 45 dels...
Compufire equipped dizzy...(Hate points)
Lightend flywheel.

Extrernal oil cooler (A MUST)
The case was drilled for the cooler.... running high temp hoses to a large cooler sitting above the gearbox with a small thermo fan fitted.
The only thing with fitting these engines is keeping the gearbox from snapping the nosecone and fitting the Carbs.

A trans brace has been fitted to mine but you do suffer with gear noise from the solid mount. ( i turn the sub's up)

The manifolds that are needed are very short.
You cannot use the velocity stacks, because of the hight restrictions. (Early pre 69 type 3)

The only air cleaners i could get to fit are RAMFLO's..
As i could bend the wire mesh to fit.

As 11CAB said.... it does go well.... VERY WELL.....
(Insert Evil Laugh Here)

There also is a 72 fastie around here with a rover 3500 V8 in it.... but the hassle he has had getting it up to scratch, i wouldn't bother.

Thanks Tazz I have always loved the look of fasty I just didn't know it was a fast fasty. If you have any picks of your motor showing carbs, oil coller etc Id love to see them.
Cheers Nige:)

Tazz - August 12th, 2004 at 05:28 PM

I'll have a look... If not I'll get the camera out.....

But it still looks like a engine....

The Oil cooler sits upright..... thermo on the back sucking air...

Get onto leon motors... he did the tune up for me and supplied the manifolds...

He will also supply the whole carb kit.....

Forget fasties...if you want to race in style get a notch...hey Tazz..*insert eviler laugh here*

NigeType3 - August 12th, 2004 at 06:30 PM

Dose anyone think ill be pushing the friendship with my car if I add a 78mm strocker crank to the equation? As I will be building this engine myself I think if nothing else Ill be pushing myself to far If I go a stroker crank.

Alex Holzl - August 12th, 2004 at 07:15 PM

One of my mates is puttin a T1 2.4L Turbo motor in his type 3 square back... Dont be worried GO BIG!!! :thumb

11CAB - August 12th, 2004 at 09:44 PM

Here's a pick of the fasty at action day, its a crap shot to see the motor, but it has a 2 point something type four injected & turboed, runs a porsche fan so doesnt run the engine cover

Tazz - August 12th, 2004 at 11:32 PM

Trouble with that is..... where does the cold air come from???

You would have to make a firewall behind the back seat...

if you cut holes in the rear deack for speakers, you would have to make a fireproof boxing around it.....

You would have to seal off the top half of the engine.....

Thats the one Graham, do you or anyone know what happened to it or if its finished

NigeType3 - August 13th, 2004 at 11:59 AM

Yer it looks good but as I have a square back would realy like to keep everything under the deck. Need the space in the back.

11CAB - August 13th, 2004 at 12:02 PM

The car belongs to Troy Alder, there was an article written on the car in VWScene a few years ago. Not sure if the new motor is finished or not.

AdrianH - August 15th, 2004 at 08:04 AM

If I were you I would stroke it, for torque reasons more than anything, T3s are heavy !! 78 x 94 is a good combo, keep the heads smallish - cam small, a torquey engine will always feel faster on the street than a highly strung HP chaser.

seagull - August 17th, 2004 at 12:03 AM

I would be looking a a subaru or a ( mr2 donk ) for some thing differant , have you seen chopers red notch at motorplex runs a ej20 turbo , what every you do you to run a 13 to be there or get wasted .

vwfastback - August 17th, 2004 at 11:28 AM

External Oil Cooler is a must.

I run a Kymco with a thermo fan. It is necessary. Without it, temps were far to high.

James C.
66 Fastback.
2275 with Superflow heads. Porsche Fan kit for added air.

NigeType3 - August 17th, 2004 at 12:57 PM

I don't realy want to go down the engine change route I think a 1916 will be ample at the moment. Ive mainly stripped eveything out of the car not only to make it lighter bu also I use it as a panel van for work.
I don't want to run serious numbers with this car as I still need it for every day use. Alfter I have finished building our new house Ill be looking for an early 60's bug like the one chopper is selling and doing a real cal look job on it complete with hi po stroked engine and 48 ida carbs.
With the oil coolers what size is eveyone runinig as they vary greatly.
Thanks for the responce Nige:D
