Hmm, acid and aluminium will make a nice explosive gas. Don't use the acid too concentrated (der!).

Uh, I don't know man, is it a really important engine? I'd make sure I didn't get any inside 'n' stuff.

becareful..... is it a case with magnesium in it..... if i remember correctly Hydrocloric acid and magnesium = Hydrogen = BOOM

You would be better off wiping it down with a solution of Caustic or Baking soda from the kitchen but wash it off good as it keeps on working

sodium hydroxide + Aluminium = hydrogen also........i would be very careful doing this. if do go ahead with it i would do it in a very well ventilated area. hydrogen is fine as long as there is no ignition.......its the ignition thats the problem lol:P

Why do you want to paint the engine case ///// it will only keep the heat in and not allow it to cool properly.

Clean all the crud off yes but dont paint the case.
