Whats a five speed like , to drive
waltermitty - August 12th, 2004 at 07:17 PM

Whats a five speed like , to drive GB, 901, renault , etc,, are they like an overdrive? or are all the gears closer?
I am thinking about my options for my oval which will have a 2.1 donk I want to do hiway stints as well as have a screamer off the mark.
I am not seriously considering a 5 speed at the moment just cutrious I will be going a single sideplate box most likely. There has been some talk re different options but what are they like on the road?
Regards Mitch

Mitch

not worth the money in my opinion

4 th is o'drive already

With 2.1L you wont need it.
just build a 3.88 really well

I've had 5 speeds in other model cars...and it's great...

I've driven some that feel and sound like the need a fifth :jesus

Haven't felt either my Type 1 or 3 need a 5th

...I guess if you have a modified engine, then maybe..or definitely?

i can never get anymore then 4 people at one time to push me around the yard, so i am too in wonder of the fabled "5 speed conversion"hahahaha :P;)

Most of the VW box 5 speed conversions use the standrd fourth for fifth as it's already an overdrive. The other 4 take up the 1-3 but closer ratios.

Better off looking at the crown wheel/pinion ratios for better length.

Go an LBug box. The crown wheel is where it's at. Pic'n'payless at blacktown usually have at least one LBug. you can pull the g/box out of the car and take it home for about $150.

A steal at twice the price. ;)

talk to 56astro he just build up a gearbox for his oval using a different 4th gear! he has a 1916 pobjoy so its sorta similar??? i dont think he has driven with his new gearbox but can give you the run down on it all!!
cheers

its Ryan here, using danielles nick.

I just put a 5 speed in my mazda, and it is exactly the same ratios, but with an extra gear on top.

from driving danielles beetle the 45 minute or so trip to get it here from where it was, I think it needs a five speed, or at least a higher cw and pinion to bring the freeway RPM down a little bit.

just looked at the beetle book we got, and comparing to my 1300, which ha 1.00 4th, .75 5th, and 4.11 diff, the beetle alledgedly has .79 4th, and around a 4.3 diff.
which puts 4th in the bettle between 4th and 5th in the mazda. the mazda has no problems operating up to 6000RPM, and what is max RPM on a standard beetle? I'm guessing 5000 or so RPM.

1600 TP Type 3's with a stock tacho indicated a 4500rpm redline...

most gearbox's i have used with the 5th gear usually just put the first 4 gears that little bit closer together... so you will get better acceleration. the problem is that most people want the top gear for fuel consumption on freeways so they expect that it will drop revs down to around 2000rpm at approx 100kmh which is not the case for most cars.

my 1986 laser (1.6L fuel injected) with 5 speed - just under 3000rpm @ 100km/h
my 2003 forester (2.5L turbo) with 5 speed - 2500rpm @ 100km/h
wifes 2003 new beetle (2.0L) with 5 speed - just under 3000rpm @ 100km/h
mates 2002 HSV (5.7L) with 6 speed - 1500rpm @ 100km/h

i think it really depends on the size of engine and the power of the engine... ie the 5.7L HSV has the power to still accelerate in top gear from 100km/h... whereas drop the revs that low at that speed in a lower powered engine and you may not be able to accelerate at all.

I run a 2110 with an L bug box - build the engine for torque and it will work well, if you build a screamer you will need close ratio gears.

Basically with this box at 7000 rpm and 205/70/15s you will get 1. 30mph 2. 60 mph 3. 100mph 4. ???? Hp and suspension dependant.
At 60 - 70 mph in 4th you will be pulling about 3000 rpm.

In a 1/4 mile you will only use three gears and maybe make mid 13s if it is really well set up. On the street, 0 - 60 mph is faster than just about anything.

i have an old raser with a 1.3 and 5 speed and it's great on the flat road
but no good for up hills
my vn v8 is a 5 speed and is bloody great 2000 rpm at 100k's
and both are good on fuel
even in 5th in the v8 kills his but when towing
and u go up a hill and the revs drop to 1800- 1600 rpm u have to go down a gear so for towing it's not quite as good
