Converting 4 Lug to 5 Lug?
Gibbo - August 15th, 2004 at 12:43 PM

Is this possible?

I have a 4 lug 69 pan, I want to get it over to 5 lug so I can have the wheels I want on it. Discs all round.

Possible? What do I need?

Cheers

Gib

wide 5 or porsche 5?

porsche 5 u can get discs and drums from Volkspower.. not sure about wide five though..

barls - August 15th, 2004 at 12:53 PM

what about v force they have blank drums and rotors, shermans conversions has them as well

Gibbo - August 15th, 2004 at 12:55 PM

Whats the difference between wide-5 and Porsche-5? Apart from the pattern of course. Im looking to fit either BRM's or 5-Spoke Empi's.

Menangler - August 15th, 2004 at 05:44 PM

If you want to run BRM's you will need a wide 5 disc brake set up.

No one in Australia make a kit for a ball joint front end, all our kits are for King and link front ends.

CB Performance make a nice kit and so do So-Cal imports in the US.

I have a So-Cal front ball joint disc kit 4 sale $1000.00 if ypu are interested.

Get some 4 to 5 stud adaptors from Vintage. 02-9789-1777

Dont forgte this will widen the track so you will need to go with low profile tyres on the front in order to clear the stock guards

If your using a disc brake kit on King n Link front end this will also widen the front track

Or you could narrrow the front beam as another option

Gibbo - August 15th, 2004 at 06:44 PM

Im thinking about narrowing the beam by about 4 inches, I have a ball-joint front end with the standard disc setup.

Suggestions?

Hmm, im wondering if I am doing the right thing, im swapping my 57 pan for a 69 pan, for mounting my oval on.

It has everything I want on it, except the 5 lug thing.

I want to run the great looking rims!

What pattern are 5-Spoke Empi's? % lug of course :)

Help! :)

Dave,
4 to 5 stud adapters won't work with the disc brake front end, the adapter hits the caliper.

killakornkobb - August 15th, 2004 at 09:50 PM

u can run BRM4's on the 4stud.. thats what im planning on doing one day.. admittedly BRM5's polished look WAY cooler:)

Beck

The ones Vintage have made have been scolloped to clear the caliper. they are made from good quality plate not cheap pressed Tawiniese steel.

No problems with clearance only the additional width in track. from memory the track on a Ball joint Front end is narrower than a King n Ling

For the rears you can put some early Type 3 brakes on there in wide 5 stud pattern. pretty much bolt on!

For the front you can get an expensive overseas kit or you can use wide 5 Type 3 fronts with modified Superbug backing plates. I have a tech article somewhere if you want it.

It of course means you will be running drums all round which is OK for a stock motor.

Steve great idea if you can find some ,,,, rock horse shit

Gibbo

buy the adaptors from Vintage Sydney 02-9789-1777 problem solved, however i would change the rear axles to short 40hp ones so as you dont have any wheel clearance problems and on the front either narrow the beam or run different profile tyres.

Yeah, Im just trying to weigh up the whole thing...

Do I stick with the 57' pan and convert it to IRS and discs all round.

Or go with the 69 pan with the IRS already on it and try to convert back to 5 lug for the wheels I want. The 69 pan already has the IRS, discs at the front and the beam adjusters welded in at the front too.

My plan is to put at least a 1916 engine in this car.

Anyone care to give me what they would do?

vw54 - August 16th, 2004 at 12:23 PM

I would go with the 69 IRS rear end and ball joint front end.

Use the adaptor plates to get 4 back to 5.... dont show the cops.

this would be the best set up except if your using stock steel guards and lowering it then wheel guard clearance will be an issue

the front can be narrowed by 1 to 2 inches

But the rear is fixed so i would have the guard lips rolled under before paint the car by a decent panel beater... then see how the clearence is as you may have to go low profile tyres

The rear discs will also widen the track so be carefull

Low profile tyres will proberly solve the problem.

Thanks All Very Much for the notes and advice, great stuff!

Im going to go for the IRS pan, and I will convert to 5-wide.

Thanks again all.

vw54 - August 16th, 2004 at 05:54 PM

If you look at most of the race cars n good street cars here in Sydney thats what they all use.

Are you lowering the front end and rear as well ??? or using stock ride height ????

Gibbo - August 16th, 2004 at 06:00 PM

Yep, the front beam adjusters are already welded in so all I may do there is narrow it by a couple of inches.

As for the rear, it will be dropped too, but Im not sure how much yet.

vw54 - August 17th, 2004 at 08:33 AM

So you need to undo the welding you have already done.

I would fit the body to the chassis first and see how much the front end can be narrowed by without disturbing the inner guards

Gibbo - August 17th, 2004 at 08:55 AM

Yeah maybe, I didnt weld them in, the pan I have aquired has them in already.

I wonder, maybe some careful measuring, lol.

vw54 - August 17th, 2004 at 06:37 PM

I think from first looks you can get approx 3/4 to 1 inch narrowing on each side and teh beam will be up against the inner guard
