Engine Rebuild
PurpleT3 - August 17th, 2004 at 09:05 AM

I will be rebuilding my 1600TP pancake motor shortly and before starting I want to plan what I will do. As the motor will be fitted with a stock type 3 FI system, it needs to remain basically stock.

What books on engine building would people recommend? What do people suggest as the essential steps required to achieve a reliable, smooth running engine?

I want to do as much of the work myself as possible, both for my own interest and to save money.

Hi,
I just rebuilt the 2 litre in my Kombi, and it's just like any other motor really. I used the Haynes Manual that came with it, and found the step by step instructions clear and easy to follow. As with any motor, attention to detail, cleanliness, and getting all the torque settings and clearances right are the big things. And don't rush, take it slowly and enjoy the experience (like sex, only grubbier). The Kombi donk's got 2 thousand k's on it now and it's running real sweet.
Cheers,
Ian

The tom wilson one is really good. I went through my first rebuild with one. It has photos and annotations for everything.

The muir book is ok too, but it isnt as thorough and only has a handfull of illustrations.
