You'll probably find fitting extractors is your best bet. I picked up an "Empi" system for my T1 that made a magical difference, is quieter than the old one ("quiet" or Glass pack muffler) and was really cheap. The paint turned white the first time I took it for a decent drive, but it works great!

Adz, I was having trouble with the standard extractors' thin, three-bolt flange. I took it to the exhaust shop and after 1/2 hour and $20 I drove out with a new two-bolt flange which was much thicker (10mm) to avoid flange leaks.

You can use any type of muffler on extractors, I have a hotdog on the type 3 and before that I had a standard oval muffler. The hotdog wasn't my choice, I just wanted something that gave me ground clearance and thats how it came back. What I really wanted was an oval muffler with inlet and outlet on the same side, so the other side could be tucked up behind the rear panel. :)

Correct, you can fit any muffler to extractors. If your engine is close to stock, you may have problems with a lack of back pressure with some types (eg large hotdog.) With stock diameter pipes a quality glass pack is probably the best bet, unless you really like a lot of noise! I don't think you'll have a lot of trouble finding a suitable replacement, if you do, V-Dub Spares and Repairs in Fremantle, WA, boasts he can provide a full range.
