Is it possible to get spacers that go between the wheels and drums on a Beetle? I'm thinking of getting a set of second hand flared guards, but think the car would look a bit silly with the wheels hidden so far inside the guards. The wheels are alloys which at the moment stick out slightly from under the stock guards.

Anyway does anyone know if it's possible or wise to install some sort of spacer which would take the wheels out about another 2 centimetres at most.

I wouldn't do it, apart from the RTA and Insurance issues, it is quite dangerous. I did it on a buggy of mine and clipped a gutter one night and thewheel nuts pulled off the studs as they were not on far enough. Best option is to have off set centres on your rims, some places will custom make or cut out your old centres and re-position.

I was thinking of getting studs for the drums of sufficient length to properly hold everything on.

They dont allow them unless they were part of original manufacture.

As Porsche come with them - they can use them.

A bloke here use to run them legally on his bug - gut he had it re-built and engineered with Posche rear brakes and arms etc

As blue74l said, they were available for the rear of 356s. Not standard though, it was an optional extra. I have them on my car. They are about 20mm wide and they screw to the bolt (ie not just slip between the wheel and the drum)
