When I change my 6v ('60 bug) to 12v, I know I have to change all the electrical bits (gen, coil, etc), as well as all the bulbs, etc. My
questions:
- bulbs would be headlights, front indicators, tail / brake, rear indicators, number plate light, interior light, instrument bulbs...anything I've
missed?
- when I change these bulbs, is it a simple task of removing the old 6v bulb and installing a new 12v bulb? Do all of these areas accomodatre a
simple change? Or, is there a requirement to fiddle or change housings, bulb holders, etc?
Just getting prepared, thats all...thanks....
NO all the bulbs are inter changable... the bases of the 6V are the same size as the 12V .... its one of the easier things to do,
I suggest that you clean all the terminals and contact areas while your there ... to give less resistance.
If you have early headlights with the bayonet type globes then you will need to change the reflectors to get the later model socket type bulb which
is easier to fit and find in 12V.
you can also give the contact a spray with a contact cleaner... but scrapping the terminals with a knife or abrasive object will do the trick
you also have to change horn and do something with the voltage to the wiper motor, oh the gen stand is different in height too.
old trick if you keep the 6v wiper motor is to get a handful of old style ignition ballast resisters(actually you can still buy them new through
repco) like what was fitted to early fords, valiants etc
about 2 inches long and 1/2 inch square made of ceramic material with a standard crimp tag at each end
either leave the existing single speed wiper switch in and keep hooking them in series for single speed until it goes at the speed you want-or fit a
two speed switch(even an old headlight switch works) with whats called a tapped series string to give you high and low speeds
oh you didnt mention the flasher can for the blinkers-you gotta change it too
