Shifting problems
moonlite6t6beetle - August 30th, 2004 at 09:12 PM

hy all my bug is experienceing some rather nasty Shifting problems.. i will explain the scenario and hope you will be able to assist me.

Ok my beetle starts a treat, then once i am driving to shift into second gear, it is nessasary to double clutch it, otherwise the gear will simply grind... and sometimes even with double clutching it will still grind.

The second point is that once the car has gone through second and into third, and the car needs to go back sown the gears, it cannot go down into second no matter how much i try...

any ideas?

grinding up gears is strange......if it was only going down i would say the syncro is just going (happens alot in bugs) i cant change down to second unless im in the spot on rev range or i double clutch but changing up its fine .

have you moved the shifter at all ?
the rubber bush at the rear may be stuffed ?
the bolts may be loose on the ajuster ?

have you oil in the box ?

i had a similar problem, it was caused by the bit on the shifter where it contacts the reverse-lockout plate being worn and allowing me to select halfway between 2nd and reverse, creating the grinding. i replaced the shifter and lockout plate, realigned it so that i got all the gears nicely and all has been ok since. (although my 2nd gear syncro is pretty rooted anyway)
