Hi all,
I am currently pondering the purchase of a 1600 engine to go into my '60 bug (6v 1200). Not being mechanically minded yet, I've heard that I will
probably need to modify my engine lid to accomodate the higher / taller / bigger generator?
Can anyone confirm or deny this? I've heard you end up with a big bump (or worse) on the back. Help! Anyone with pictures?
Nomods needed fits fine under stock lid.
That is as long as we are talking VW engine with VW altrnator / generator
There are no body modifications but you will need to clearance the transmission (if it is a 1200 one) to fit the larger flywheel of the 1600, you will
also need a 12v starter and a conversion bushing (this fits in the tranny and u just tap out the old one and put the new one in).
The engine might be a bit starved of air for cooling with the early decklid (which has no slots) as the late engines have larger fans and make more
heat.
Its a pretty easy job, but time consuming because you have to clearance the transmission bellhousing.
