hey, just wondering if anyone has any advice (method/best products) on how to best go about restoring the dirty old hubcaps on my 75 kombi?

There Flat n thin for a start and you can still buy reasonablly good new ones.

If you restoring them then find good origional German metal ones before u start.

Strip the chrome and go to a panel beater... who can tap out the dents using the file finish method... not grind n bog

thne find a decent chrome plater ( impossible ) then finish wlth a good WAX to protect against corrosion.

Are they just dirty, or rusty? Gis a look at 'em. Steel wool will get rid of a lot of pitting, then Autosol metal polish (about $10 a tube) will get rid of some more and polish them up as well. Depends on their condition. You can have them straightened and rechromed, (I can give you a referral if you're in Melbourne), but it would be way cheaper to buy replacements as Dave said.

That looks like it would come up a treat. Looks like sticky stuff from tape of some kind across it which will come off with kero, then some Autosol to clean and polish. Get in around the logo with Autosol and a toothbrush to remove the built up grunge and they'll be beautiful. Are they a bit dented. Hard to tell in the pic. Unless the others are really beaten up, they'd look great polished up. Nice to keep the originals on the bus. The ones that came with it from the factory.
