the other day i was driving home and all of a sudden my baja (1600 SP w/ 30 pict 2 carb) started coughing a spluttering and wouldnt run
properly......i pulled over and the car promptly stalled when i took my foot off the accelerator. I checked the leads and obvious things. i could
start the car but then if i tried to take off it would do it again......i limped the car to the end of my road (about 500metres away) and walked the
rest of the way home. i then came back later and it was still doing it so i called the guy up the road from me whos got a couple of buggies and a
eureka and now a sabre. and when he came down it started and stopped doing it but was still running a little rough. i drove it home figureing there
was some crap coming through the fuel filter and had got wedged in a jet. so i bought a new fuel filter and whacked that on and put new line from the
tunnel to the fuel filter and from the filter to the fuel pump......there was already new line form the pump to the carb but i flushed it. then i
drained the carbie bowl and started the car and it would run but pretty rough....but run all the same. so after work today (ive been driving dads
subie) i pulled the carbie off and took the jets out and blew them out with a compressor blew out and fuel passages with the compressor and cleaned
any muck out of the carbie bowl, checked the gasgets and then put it all back together and back on the car and started the thing and now its doing
the same thing it did on the way home.....coughing and spluttering and it will die unless i keep tapping the accelerator. WHATS WRONG WITH
IT?.......surely this is a fuel issue? im going to go see Vince ( the buggie guy) tomorrow and see if he can have a look at it cause its got me
stumped. i need this car because its my daily driver (my only registered car) i cant keep driving dads car as it has a very illegally cracked
windscreen and well i want to drive my baja anyway!.
can anyone help me?

have you changed the accelerator pump diaphragm , is there enough fuel getting through?
no i havent changes the acc. pump diaphram but fuel is getting though......i only rebuilt the carbie about a month ago.
Are you 100% sure its fuel ????? :o
all the gaskets are in tact arent they i had this problem and it was a shot gasket blocking things up
what distributor are you running ?
009 bosch but it was running fine before this happend.....the gasgets are perfect....as i said i only rebuilt this carb about a month ago

Try changing the condensor on the dizzy (not too exy to replace) - I had similar symptoms on my 1200 a while back. Tried the same carb cleansing
rituals, leads, plugs, rotor button etc. - of course the condensor was the last thing I checked!
Not 100% sure this is the problem for you, but just another consideration.
but why would it kind of come good and then after i blew out the jets and stuff its running crap (er) again.?
thanks dasdubber i might try that......the dissy cap looks fine i already checked that......the points arent worn or burnt or anything strange and the rotor button looks fine.
you can test it before you replace it
thanks for the help desert moose, dasdubber, pyro and pod ......ill start having a good geeze at electrics tomorrow.
To test the capacitor "condensor" take the cap off then turn the crank till the points open. take the wire that goes from the distributor to the coil off. get a multi meter or a test light, if your using a m/meter put one end on the distributor wire and the other to gound and test for resistance, or with a test light put one end on the wire and one on the + side of the coil (make sure the ignition is on) and the other on the distributor wire if it lights up its stuffed. what your looking for is if it gounds with the points open...:thumb
ok thanks moose ill do that in the morning.
have you checked the fuel lines at teh tank end of the car
is there a clogged filter there?
is the filter in the tank clogged?
is the tank full of crud?
another thought
got any air leaks? spray water or crc around all parts of the inlet maniford listen for change in engine sound
dont you just hate this sort of problem
regards
David
the fuel is getting to the carbie bowl fine so its not a blockage at the front. i only cleaned out my tank a few months ago. ill try the airleak
thing
Cheers
Nick
PS: yes i do hate these sort of problems!:cussing
Your carby manifold is leaking or cracked. It's happened to me twice. Just run it and push the carby to one side at a time to see if you can block the leak temporarily. Even then if you can't see a difference, it's still probably the manifold or manifold gasket...
i had a little bit of shit in the points and the gap setting was a bit wrong..........BUT THE BAJA IS BACK NOW!!!! running like a dream. i hate simple things that piss you off.
