How to remove CV joint bolts on 69 pan?
Gibbo - September 5th, 2004 at 11:14 AM

Hey all, What are the bolts that hold on the cv joints? They look like allen key bolts, but I have been told that they are something else?

Anyone? I plan to remove mine today, just want to know what I need to do it!

Cheers

Some are allen keys, with 6 sides, some cars use 'star' style with 12 'sides'. You will need a tool... an Allen key MIGHT work, if you use an extension to get some extra leverage. Better to go and buy the proper tool that fits on a socket wrench

Anyone know where to buy one of these 12 side thingos?

Cheers

yeah they used 12 point. you can get them in sockets for your ratchet at the local hardware store. They tend to gunk up with crap a lot of the time and they are sometimes rounded out from people trying to remove them with allen keys. replace the bolts with 6mm allens.

Anyone know what size I need?

They call it an 8mm twelve-point, but my local tool shop says there's no such thing. MickMotors said he was getting some in.

I got one today from Brad (COR) did the job in about 30 mins once I had the right tool!

:D

don't replace them with allen head bolts!

the "star" type bolts can handle up to 40% higher torquing than allen style without stripping out. They are the new standard issue for vee dub and are much better than allen heads.

Cool, thanks for the tip.

the tool is preety hard to find now days... dont use a single hex allen key as you will strip the heads of the bolts

get the right tool 12 point and use a small screwdriver inside the head hole to remove all the gunk first i usually give the csocket a light tap into teh head as well to make sure it bottoms and does nbot slip out when undoing the bolt

tool world up here in Bris sells them for impact sockets for like $8 work buying a couple...or try Custom Off Road last time I was there they had a load (don't know if there for sale though)

Gibbo - September 26th, 2004 at 08:08 PM

I got the right tool and took all the bolts out in about 30 mins.

Done, thanks everyone.

Yes about 30 mins, I dont have the access to air tools you do m8, also I had to try and weigh down the other side of the pan cause the pressure of me lifting or pching was lifting the other side!

Anyway all done now. And lessons learnt.

Brad - September 26th, 2004 at 08:57 PM

Just to avoid confussion they ar not Star or Torque tools they are an M8 Multi Spline tool. If you get a star or Torque then you will have a hard time ... hey Gibbo :>

Gibbo - September 26th, 2004 at 09:57 PM

Yeah, Especially if you are given the wrong tool and lead down the garden path by someone eh..... :)
