there is an adjuster on the alternator but im not 100% sure where cause its been a while since i played with a stock 2L in a kombi. the bolt for the adjuster is above and on the tin ware behind the pulley
what does this adjuster look like?? im new to 2lters so im a little slow!
maybe send us a pic of what your talking about?
id love to mate but i drive a bug and even the one with that motor is not the same set up. im working from memory from when i worked with my old man. it is a a allen key head from memory. and it sits in a long slot, you loosen it and the alternator slides to the left so you can get the belt on. to tension the belt lever the alternator to the right
There' a little rectangular plastic cover over the hole in the tinware on the uper right of the alternator. take this out and you will see a allen
head set screw. This is the adjuster to slack off the tension so you can move the pulley closer and give you the clearance required.
Rob...
thanks robo i couldnt remember
Lucky I happen to have a 2L sitting in the garage.
Remove covers and loosen the screw with a 5mm allen key. Push the generator up and left until you can pull the belt off.

yous rock!!!!:bounce:bounce:bounce
this is the bolt but it wont move!!:cry
the bolt undoes but when i try to slide it up or down it doesnt budge. am i missing something??
do i have to take off the tin ware??
ok THAT BOLT HAS TO BE LOOSENED A BIT ,
then, have a look at the lower side of alternator & you will see round end of another bolt, at the back end of this, accessable from underneath is
a 13mm nut, this has to be loosened also
had to ask my old man on this one. under the car you have to undo the air deflector plate which has 4 bolts holding it on. once you get this off get a torch and look up there and you will see a 13mm bolt at the bottom of the alternator crack this one off a tad adn you should be able to move the alternator
ok i will try it now!
thanks
wooooohoooooooooooo i managed to to it, i needed to use some elbow grease and use a srew driver to lift it up but i got it in the end thanks to you
