What size is the steering wheel nut?
andrewh - September 12th, 2004 at 01:59 PM

Can anyone tell me what size the steering wheel nut is on a 74 standard bug? My workshop manual says it's 36 but it's wrong.

Also anyone know what sort of puller I should get to remove the wheel? Will any sort of general purpose puller fit? It's an aftermarket boss by the way, not the standard wheel. I don't fancy trying to hammer it off, it was a pretty tight fit when I got it put on.

Cheers

Andrew

27mm. After much searching I found it right under my nose.

EDIT: No it's not. The site I got the information from is wrong. 27mm is too big.

i know the standards are 27mm probably where that info came from. Supers love to be different though don't they!

I used a ratchet with an extention to get one off. It was pretty tight but used some wd40 and let it soak...presto!

Funny thing is that the site I got the info from was talking about a Super Bug. Mine's a standard and the nut is smaller. I guess I'll just have to keep returning sockets to Bunnings until I get the right size.

just drive down there, explain why and ask if you can test them out.

Ordinarily Pete, a good idea but the reason I was taking the wheel off was because my indicator switch had broken and I didn't want to drive without working indicators.

Turns out it was a 24mm nut. Got it right on only my second go.
